Why Does Cal Want To Meet Mare
In order to fulfill himself as a king, Cal wanted to know his people. To do this he would sneak out and socialize with fellow villagers. While doing this, he encountered Mare Borrow. This was a crucial event to his life because if he would of never met Mare, she would have not been able to go to the palace and discover her powers. It is also benefited Cal by helping him meet one of his only allies.

    The character arc that helps explain this the most is Prince Maven. He is the “forgotten prince”, “the shadow of the flame” (the powers Prince Cal and Prince Maven have is control over fire), but he is the deadliest secret keeper because no one ever expects him to turn out to be evil. (Aveyard, 2016, p. 105-106). In the beginning, Maven is an innocent kid controlled by his mother, and he believes that he is unloved by his father and his brother. He is forced into an arranged marriage with the main character, Mare Barrow; however, even though it is forced both end up developing feeling for one another. About ¾ of the way through the novel, we find out that all along he has been keeping the secret of overthrowing his father and going into power. Maven plans to have his brother kill their father, thus creating a dead king and traitor prince. When this secret is revealed, and the plan sadly works, it brings Maven into power. The consequence is Maven not only losses his father, but also his brother Cal and Mare. Maven even gives Mare the chance to come with him and rule the kingdom, but she denies him, and his heart is crushed (Aveyard, 2016). He destroys everything that ever meant anything to him.     Do people realize the amount of animals that are killed each year for merely just a small portion of their body? Whether it is hide, hoofs, or urine, it’s never enough to make it worth killing the animal, taking parts of the body and leaving the rest go to waste. Writers such as Peter Hammarstedt in “Defending Whales and Seals,” goes on to explain how he dedicated his career to saving these animals. Hammarstedt states, “I wanted Peter in this book because he illustrates very well how rewarding it is to follow your heart and have huge impact on those with no voice." This quote captured my heart and led me into the research of Premarin Mares. Horses are being hung from the ceiling by a harness, with a machine hooked to them to collect their urine. They are being given half the amount of water a horse should have, all so their urine will be more pure. These horses are called Premarin Mares. They get the name Premarin from “Pregnant mare’s urine” (HRT Drug Widely Prescribed, 2003). Premarin is a medicine created fro women going through menopause. These women have no clue how Premarin is being made. Once the mares have gone through the pregnancy and give birth, the foals are immediately on their way to death. They are either sent to a pre-slaughter house to gain weight, or they go straight to the slaughter house, because foal meat is a delicacy in some countries. Women need to be aware that Premarin should not be used because horses are being abused and killed for the creation of a medicine that has negative side affects upon human consumption.…

    Even before we meet Caliban on the set, we are given background information on him which influences the audience to view him as some kind of hideous monster; we are told that Caliban is the Offspring of the devil and the witch Sycorax and so already we see Caliban as a representative of black magic and evil which encourages the audience to dislike him. Furthermore, Prospero refers to Caliban’s birth as something that Sycorax “did litter here” with the words, “litter” making us think of an animal being born, all of which builds up a hideous and savage image of Caliban. We also look closely at the name Caliban itself which evokes monstrous qualities as it can be anagrammatized to read, “Cannibal.” This is a term which derived from the word, “carib” which was a European term used to describe flesh eaters. In this sense Shakespeare associates Caliban with the kinds of, “savage” man eaters that Europeans would read about at the time the play was written.
