It’s a question that people ask all the time. If we’re all part of the human race, why are people racist? No race is superior or inferior to another, there are no biological differences between people. We’re all equal and the same. Racism is ugly and it divides people into “them” and “us”, based on some facts on where we come from or the colour of our skin. It happens all the time when people feel that it’s okay, when it’s certainly not, to treat others badly as they go about their daily lives. Its embedded in every aspect of our social system and we can’t stop it. Did you know, that one in five school students experience racism every day?
We get the idea that humans can be subdivided into distinct groups that are different in their social behaviour. Many use the term “racism” to refer to distinct physical characteristics that separate them from us. A lot of it comes from when we we’re younger. When our friends or family express racist opinions when they know it’s not okay. It’s common that we will take on the views of others and put it on ourselves. We copy. We think it’s okay because others do it. But the problem is that, if we don’t do something about it, it will stay with us for a lifetime. …show more content…
But it creates some sense of a belonging that is important and sets up differences between other groups, which will lead us to thinking that our group is better than others when they are all the same. We label people. We look at the way they dress and where they go or come from, we look at who they hang with or talk to and put them into groups without even knowing them. We need to get to know people from different racial backgrounds and not compare them to others. We are all the same. Did you know, that one in three people experience racism in the
