Why Do People Abusing The Welfare System
The debate over Welfare has been a hot topic in the U.S for many years now. Welfare in the U.S. started long before the government welfare programs that we know today. Welfare started in the early days when the U.S. colonies imported the British Laws. The laws made were established for those unable to work because of their age or physical health and those able to work just unemployed. When the Great Depression began, nearly 18 million elderly, disabled, and single mothers already lived at the bare subsistence level. Welfare does not benefit everyone, but who does it benefit? How do you fix people abusing the welfare system. Fixing the welfare system is simple we have to spend more money to save money. By spending more money it doesn’t mean that it’s going to recipients but for more workers to oversee these programs so we don’t have system abusers.( Allen Clifton) In our welfare systems today there are many loopholes that people who abuse it are well aware of them. When the departments who are suppose to be overseeing these programs so they don’t get abused are simply overworked and their budgets are constantly getting cut how are they properly suppose to do their jobs?(Allen Clifton) Abuse is one of the biggest problems in our welfare system today. Us as taxpayers should not be supporting someone's drug addiction. In order for people to be on welfare they first need to be drug tested even before they start filling out the forms to apply. Some people say that drug testing for welfare is unconstitutional but in order for anyone to get a job they have to be drug tested first, so before people apply for welfare they need to be tested too. Craig Blair is a Republican in the West Virginia Legislature. This is Blair’s position: “If so many jobs require random drug tests these days, why not these benefits?” Blair is just one spokesperson for this point of view (Press, 2009). Drug testing all the people on or applying for welfare could be expensive but the money the government would be saving from not having to support people's drug addictions. The people who pass the test will be reimbursed, while those who fail will have to get clean and reapply (Alcindor, 2012). Drug testing is most likely going to cost around $2.6 million the first year, but it should go down after that. The way that the system is going to be set up is that if someone fails the test then they lose their benefits for three months. If they reapply and fail again, then they completely lose their benefits (Schneider, 2013).
