Date Drug testing refers to the process through which an employer determines whether employees are using drugs. Many companies have adopted drug testing policies in the work places. The testing is done to determine whether they use, or have used alcohol and drugs such as amphetamines, marijuana and cocaine. The companies have implemented the drug testing policies by sharing written policies with all the employees. For that matter, the companies have laid diversified strategies in mitigating the effects of drug use in the workplace. They have done this through educating the employees about the dangers of drug abuse, and provide assistance programs for those who have problems in relation to alcohol and drug abuse (Verstraete, 2011).

Despites being an infringement of the personal privacy right of the employees, I think companies need to conduct drug testing on them to enhance the general safety of all the employees within the company. According to (Gerber and Yacoubian, 2001), the use of drugs and alcohol has direct effect on productivity, the morale of the employees and the company’s general expenditure which is influenced by health care claims as a result of the use of drugs. Drug testing can be conducted at different times for instance in pre-employment to avoid hiring employees who use drugs illegally. It can also be done when the employers observe signs and perhaps symptoms that lead them to suspect to suspect that an employee is using drugs in workplace. Similarly, it can be done periodically and in a scheduled manner after specific periods of time. It can as well be at random, or when employees return on

Co workers will no longer tolerate the attitude causing anger through out the workplace. Some symptoms that are not easily detected are the accidents, theft, and turnover. Depending on the intent of the company, an accident here or there can lead to the nickname of accident-prone. Theft will not be just at the workplace but also in personal life. Drug abusers start by stealing from family and friends and lead to workplace theft. According to National Institute of Drug Abuse; “Sometimes they steal property to get money for drugs. Or often they will commit crimes while “high” on drugs.” A thorough background check and drug screen should help prevent an up and coming abuser.     At my place of employment, there is a comprehensive drug policy in place. This policy is a part of the employee manual which every prospective employee is required to read and sign before they are offered employment at the company. The biggest part of the drug policy is portion that states, “All employees are subject to periodic, random testing for the use of alcohol or drugs (including but not limited to illegal and prescription drugs) in violation of this policy. ” and the consequence of refusing to take the test, or by testing positive for prohibited substances while employed by the company is also in the drug policy, “An employee whose test results are found to be positive, or who fails to comply with the above procedures, including failing to immediately submit to testing once notified, will be subject to appropriate discipline, up to and including termination of employment.” (Employee Handbook, 2008).
