Why Did Lincoln Lose The Civil War
During the 1860 Presidential election Abraham Lincoln’s campaign was struggling. Stephen A. Douglas, the Southern Democrat nominee, was picking up steam as he broke the political standards by instituting a traveling campaign. His campaign knew no boundaries as he ventured across the broken nation from New England to the Deep south where he gave speeches, shook hands, and kissed babies. Lincoln’s campaign however was lacking as he was firmly rooted in Springfield. Lincoln knew that he could not afford to lose this election. With the freighting hostile tension between the Southern and Northern states Lincoln had to act fast. Needless to say this infuriated Booth to the bone. Booth decided to throw himself into theatre to quell his rage. But when the Civil War broke out amongst slavery rights Lincoln once again called on Booth. Lincoln promised him that if he just wrote him one more speech he would cease the war and allow slavery in the South. Booth, hating to see his fellow Americans die at the hands of other fellow Americans, complied with the president's request. Booth penned one of the greatest speeches known to man, The Gettysburg Address. When the fighting didn’t stop Lincoln made the executive order of passing the Emancipation Proclamation and freed the slaves a meager 2 months after He delivered Booth’s speech. This was the last straw for Booth as Lincoln had lied to him about the Vice Presidency and about freeing the slaves. Booth was so enraged he began colluding with other Confederate supporters and they plotted to assassinate President Lincoln. Five days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox President Lincoln was attending a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington
