Many people do not consider cheerleading to be a sport, even though the athleticism required and the danger involved in the activities performed still are not considered to make this a sport, but cheerleading meets all of these aspects but it’s not getting the sports status. Not only is cheerleading a sport but it is one of the most difficult and dangerous sports in the world. According to researcher Wayne Drehs, in the magazine “Athletes include cheerleaders.” It has become a great argument in which cheerleading should have the sport status. Cheerleading is a school activity with gifted young athletes that work just as hard as any other sport.…
What is the definition of a sport? A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team is competing against one another to win. The sport cheerleading contains a wide range of physical exertion including: tumbling, various jumps and tricks, stunting, and choreographic dances, thus resulting in needing great stamina. Another reason cheerleading is a sport is the preparation time involved, and the athletic scholarship opportunities competing as a cheerleader presents. Not to mention that cheerleading has the highest rate for injuries among sports. Many people argue that cheerleading is not a sport, clearly they don’t know what a sport is.…
When I asked Alexis, a cheerleader at Thornton High what her thoughts were on cheer being a sport, she said, “It bothers me when people say what I do isn’t a sport. I work out, I compete, I am a part of a team, I practice. I know we don’t actually play a game or throw a ball but that is the only thing that sets us apart from the sports. Cheerleading is as much of a sport as football is.” As I continued to speak with Alexis she informed me that a sports physical is required to participate. It made me question, if cheerleading isn’t a sport then why is a sports physical required to be on a high school cheer squad?…
Competitive cheerleading has never been called a sport according to the government. There has been an ongoing debate as to if cheerleading fits the definition of a sport which is “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (Dictionary.com n.d.). By that definition you could interpret it to mean cheerleading is a sport, but there is much more to being a sport than meeting a definition. Competitive cheerleading does require specialized training, extensive practices, and a dedicated team; but to become a sport there are several problems that must be addressed. There is not a consistent set of competitions, no standard set of rules, and no regulations for judging. There has also been many court debates on this subject with cheerleading always on the losing end. In order for cheerleading to become a sport these problems must be addressed. Once this is addressed then cheerleading could become an official sport and the athletes would be eligible for athletic scholarships for full tuition amounts.…
Cheerleading can be a dangerous sport if you don't follow the proper rules and it is important to know what you are doing someone gets injured. If you try to do a stunt that is difficult you need to have the proper practice and training. Cheerleading can be a safe sport only if you have done it correctly.…
A sport is a psychical activity that requires talent, physical agility, dedication, time, a team and/or a coach. It also is governed by a set of rules, requires practice and is often competitive, yet occasionally played for recreation. Cheerleading fits under all of these categories but is still considered a club at Northern Valley High School. I suppose that what cheerleading once was; a ditzy, delicate, stand by activity for rowdy young teen girls; was considered a club, but that makes sense. Then, cheerleading was by no means a ‘sport’.…
Opposition to making cheerleading a sport, continually say, cheerleaders are not athletes. Confirmation of this lies in the position paper of Women’s Sports Foundation, "any physical activity in which relative performance can be judged or quantified can be developed into a competitive sport as long as (1) the physical activity includes the above defined elements and (2) the primary purpose is competition versus other teams or individuals within a competition structure comparable to other athletics' activities…Cheerleading in its current format, does…
Cheerleading is an organized activity which involves leading a series of cheers to rally the crowd at sports events . On high levels, cheerleading is itself a sport, with participants performing dances and complex tricks which are extremely physically demanding. Cheerleaders can often be seen on the sidelines at professional sports games, and organized cheerleading also exists in schools , from elementary school all the way through college. Some people are dismissive of cheerleading as a sport , because it may not initially appear to be very strenuous , but cheerleaders at the top level of competition are actually very serious athletes, Comparable to top-tier athletes in other sports.…
In my opinion I think that Cheerleading should be a competitive sport because cheerleaders work as hard as all other sport players do. For example cheerleaders show muscle, athleticism and agility when practicing and cheering at games. Cheerleaders show muscle because they lift other people they throw and stack people on top of other people to make a pyramid. They show Agility because when doing cheers they have to make sharp and quick movements with their hands and their feet. I don’t think that it’s fair that cheerleading isn’t a competitive sport because it doesn’t involve a ball. That is why I think that cheerleading is just as much as a sport than any other…
Cheerleading is the fastest growing girls sport, yet more than half of Americans do not believe it is a sport. In addition, they fail to distinguish between sideline cheerleaders and competitive ones. Sideline cheerleaders' main goal is to entertain the crowd and lead them with team cheers, which should not be considered a sport. On the other hand, competitive cheerleading is a sport.…
First of all let’s take a look at cheerleading as a whole and the basics of it. Well to start off there are two types of cheerleaders, competitive and noncompetitive. Competitive cheerleading seems more controversial that noncompetitive, at least that’s what I believe. If you have never seen a competitive cheerleader, then look some up. They are usually quite athletic and able to many things you and I couldn’t do.…
Every cheerleader gets fired up when someone sparks the “Is cheerleading a sport?” debate. According to Webster’s Dictionary, a sport is defined as a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other. The amount of intense training that cheerleaders do is crazy. Cheerleaders get injured, sometimes it is serious then other times it’s not. Cheerleaders also get offered scholarships and many other opportunities. Cheerleading offers many scholarships for college cheer, one might enter an all-star team, or they may even become a coach/choreographer. Cheerleading is in the top five most dangerous sports in the world, yes. A sport. It’s proven to be in the top five dangerous, and yet people still have the gut to say that it is not a sport. Here’s to the people who say cheerleading isn’t a sport and that cheerleaders aren’t athletes.…
In my opinion, Allstar Cheerleading is indeed a sport. My reasoning behind my opinion is that Allstar cheerleading takes just as much, or more physical activity, requires skills necessary to compete a routine, and involves events comparable to games for football, baseball, etc.…
I’m not saying that danger should define something as a sport, but, when deciding whether or not something is a sport danger should be a factor. Another item to think about when deciding if cheerleading should be a sport or not, is to think about what activities are already considered sports. Chess, poker, and bowling are considered sports and they take very little physical prowess. Someone doesn’t even need legs to play chess or poker. Bowling only takes being able to actually pick up the ball and throw it down the lane. One other “sport” that I think doesn’t deserve its label as a sport is curling. Curling is an Olympic sport where someone slides a stone down a lane of ice and his or her team members try the sweep the ice in front of the stone with a broom. All of these activities are fun, but I don’t think they should be considered sports. I feel if stone gliding is considered an Olympic sport, then doing aerial flips, cheering, and tossing people in the air should definitely…
