TITLE: Why Banning the Use of Cell Phones While Driving Should Be Mandatory Nationwide?
A. General Purpose: Persuade
B. Specific Purpose: Persuade my audience that banning the use of cell phones while driving should be mandatory nationwide.
C. Central idea: Cell phones are as common in the market today as a wrist watch on your arm. Everyone has one including the very young as well as the extreme elderly. People are constantly talking, texting, playing games or surfing on the Internet on their smart phones. These devices are harmless until individuals decided to get behind the wheel and drive. Therefore, the government should pass legislation to ban cell phone usage while driving nationwide.
I. Introduction
The statistics for the number of deaths and life-altering accidents for our younger drivers are staggering. Texting while driving causes 11 teen deaths EVERY DAY. That is 11 families, schools, and communities that are forever missing children, classmates, teammates, and that great kid next door because they took that 5 seconds it takes to text that they were running late, or whatever not-so-important message they sent. Additionally, it is still legal in 11 states to text while driving; only 10 fully prohibit cell phones while driving. According to the NHTSB, texting is 6 times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. Finally, texting is not a teen-only problem with 47% of adults admitting to texting while driving.
A. Distracted driving is an epidemic.
B. Lawmakers should act responsibly and enact measures of how to prevent these accidents.
C. As a result of this epidemic, some states have already implemented laws in order to address this issue. Today, my mission will be to convince
