Throughout the book, Jeannette has trouble coping with her difficult life and all the obstacles that she must face. While reading the book, I noticed myself comparing life as it was then and as it was now. Jeannette Walls, as an author, does a phenomenal job of contrasting life then and how it is now. Although during both life today and then have many obstacles, difficulties, and issues, different issues are faced. A lot of these issues I noticed were actually relevant to my life. These issues include communal, racial, political, economical, and…

In Ron Rash’s novel “Serena” he brings together the perfect couple. You learn throughout the novel that, not only are they the perfect couple, but also the perfect business team. In order for them to function so well together, they both have to be almost identical in every way. Rash illustrates them as such as the story goes on, but in his concluding segment the reader finally realizes that Serena only differs from her husband in the fact that she doesn’t value his life as much as the company and her dream. My read allowed me to see another path that could’ve been taken that would’ve changed the story in an altogether positive way. This path can be opened by a simple question; what if he’d married Rachel?…

The Ogilvie’s are rich, greedy, and selfish people. Mattie’s mother, Mrs. Cook wants Mattie to marry one of the Ogilvie boys. So when mother tries to hint at it, the Ogilvie girls realize it. In the text it says “‘Mama must you be so thick headed ? Mrs.Cook is asking if you might consider miss Cook as a wife for one of our brothers”’(53). One of the Ogilvie girls, Jeanine specifically points out that mother is planning on marrying Mattie to one of the Ogilvies. The Ogilvies believe that they are above the Cooks because of their money. There is an ironic part of the story though. Colette, the oldest Ogilvie girl had been faking being the wife of a respected figure, Roger Garthing and was actually married to her french tutor. In the novel it says “‘miss Colette came down with an awful case of the fever… The girl is burning up. The whole family gathers at her bedside, thinking she’s going to Jesus, when she sits straight up in bed and starts screaming for ‘Loueey!Loueey!’ Turns out this Louis is her husband”(186). This shows that although the rich seem better off, they have their flaws. It is ironic that the mean and selfish Ogilvies, who thought they were above everyone else, were then the laughingstock of the city. Mattie realizes that being humble and respectable pays off rather than being stuck - up and imperious. Mattie is starting to believe that what she is doing will lead to to good because…

Jamie’s family, with the exception of her brother Charlton, is very negative about her and Matts so called “good luck”. Linda, Charlton’s wife, thinks that Charlton over pays Matt. She is very bitter about Jamie and Matt having such luck and buying a lake house at such a young age. Rash writes, ‘”I reckon we don’t all get lucky with lake houses and such,’ Linda said, looking not at Matt but at Jamie, ‘but that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve it just as much. You just make sure your husband saves enough of his strength to do the job Charlton’s over paying him to do”’(241). Matt always reassures Jamie that Linda is just envious and that the two of them do work very hard and have earned everything that they have. After Charlton got into an accident at work, even Jamie’s mother wasn’t very encouraging about them having such nice things so young and expected Jamie to help Linda and Charlton out, what seems to be a little too much. Jamie’s mother tells her, ‘”That lake house, you had no right to expect…

Rachel stared into the blur of trees passing the bus window. The woods were getting deeper and thicker as the bus moved north, away from her empty home and the pregnant graves of her mother, father and son. She looked up into the sky and thought about the faith she also orphaned there, a faith she had since birth, a faith she had painstakingly force-fit into every moment of her life for thirty years. But it had proven to be like the rest of her relationships, one where she was always expected to give and never to receive. It was her time to receive, so it had to be left behind. She leaned over and reached into her brown purse, which sat on the floorboard tucked between her feet. She exhumed from it her worn little journal and her pencil and…

Other than dealing with the elitist society, the story also displays many features of modern literature. The main character’s obsession for material items and desire to gain wealth was another aspect of the story that made it very modernist. At a young age, he thought he was too young to work as a caddy and strived to obtain greater wealth. This was one of the main qualities of characters in the Modernism time.…

The main characters, Emma and Cher are representational products of their society and parallels can be drawn in the opening scenes, particularly in relation to self-knowledge. The Bildungsroman progression from delusion to social awareness is a universal value in both texts despite their differing contexts. Emma is introduced as “handsome, clever, and rich” who had “a disposition to think a little too well of herself.” Austen’s satirical tone as the omniscient narrator alerts the responder to Emma’s inability to understand her position in society. Furthermore, while Emma successfully matches Mr. Weston and Ms. Taylor, her motives are superficial as she sees it as “the greatest amusement in the world!” She also believes Harriet’s beauty “should not be wasted on the inferior society”, and it would be “interesting and highly becoming” to “improve her”. Austen employs verbal irony through Emma’s dialogue, which exposes her flaws of arrogance and shallowness. However, Emma eventually develops self awareness as shown when she realizes her mistake of matching Harriet with Mr. Elton and influencing her to refuse a suitable marriage with Mr. Martin.…

In the free-verse novel, The Simple Gift, author, Steven Herrick, subverts normative conventions of gender and class to present the possibilities of economic and social freedom to his young adult audience. This subversion can be seen throughout the conscious characterisation of three distinct characters: Billy, Old Bill and Caitlin- each of whom has different social and financial positions, yet deliberately challenge the expectations of their gender and class to construct complex, even contradictory, identities. Throughout this essay, I will examine how the deliberate decisions made by each character reveals the extent to they wish to challenge gender and class-based norms, as their identities are consciously informed by their previous social…

The story starts in a café following the life of a waitress, Jesse, and in a moment of bold self-confidence she introduces herself to a man she was serving, Ethan, who is a struggling writer pushed to the edge of despair after having another novel rejected by publishers. For her, it was more than a chance to meet someone; she thought she could inspire him and be the muse he needed to get over the hump. He is then to ask her out on a date and she accepts. He looked like the perfect guy for her. A moment later, in walks Troy, a confident and successful advertising executive. After picking up his order he tells her that he doesn’t usually introduce himself to random girls he meets but he thinks that this time is different and that he would regret not asking her for her number. She is flattered and so she gives it to him. She starts going out with both guys; they are portrayed as very similar guys with similar taste in almost everything. For example she would go out with Ethan to play miniature golf and then she goes with Troy to a huge classy golf course. Although they are similar, they are different; they come from different class levels, different backgrounds and financial statuses. Ethan is a middle class man; in fact he told her that he is an aspiring author who is about to give up on writing because he hasn’t been able to make a living out of it. On the other hand; Troy is completely different in that regard, he is very successful, he is a co-owner of a very efficacious advertising company that he is planning on expanding, he is a self-built man who lives a lavish life. As time passes Jesse starts falling for both guys, her indecisiveness and secrecy start getting to her and messing with her head, until she finally comes to a point where she has to makeup her mind. At first Ethan proposes and then Troy asks her to move away with him to a different state. She is torn and unable to make the decision, all that is shown is her breaking up with Ethan and packing as if…
