Columbus is associated with exploration, science, and progress and stands for everything people admire. The fact that his way to glory caused the suffering and death of millions of people is often forgotten preventing his image from losing its function as a role model. Analyzing primary, literary sources, however, we are able to get a decent look on the person of Christopher Columbus and his motives. Starting with (2.1) essential background knowledge on the circumstances of his time and continuing with (2.2) information about Columbus and his journey, this paper will address (2.3) Columbus's motives and show that despite his utmost efforts of presenting himself and his actions in a favorable way, Columbus's Letter to Lord Raphael Sanchez,
Treasurer of Ferdinand and Isabella, King and Queen of Spain on His first Voyage (1493) reveals subtextual flaws of the heroic Columbus foreshadowing the negative impact of his actions. 2 The Story of Christopher Columbus

    Christopher Columbus found a new world and jumpstarted an age of exploration like no other. I had not heard or read before, that Christopher Columbus was imprisoned for his crimes and treatment of the Spaniards in his colony, and lost many of his titles and his wealth.     Some may say that history has a tendency to repeat itself. From episodes regarding war, to expansionism, and incidents of genocide similar examples are present through modern day. Columbus' discovery of the New World has been controversial. There are those who wish to honor him and therefore feel that the accusations concerning his crime of genocide are revisions of history. Blinded by greed Columbus turned into a vicious tyrant hungry for only gaining wealth and status. However, there are sources that describe the atrocities Columbus and the Spaniards committed against the Indians. These brutalities are all part of a bigger picture of genocide committed by Columbus when he discovered the New World. Many of the tribulations done are similar to those performed by the Nazis in World War II. Hitler's "Final Solution to the Jewish Problem" attempted to be solved through a mass genocide we know as the Holocaust. Some people would argue that Columbus "conquests" and "Hitler's Final Solution to the Jewish Problem" are comparable. These people look at the atrocities that both parties committed against their victims and the amount of people who died. Although the methods and intent were different, the slavery and subjugation of the Indians and the Jews as compared through the two men Columbus and Hitler and had an affect on our modern world.…

    Christopher Columbus can in no way, shape, or form be considered a hero. A hero is someone who performs good deeds for the sake of others and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus did not do a single good deed in any of his four voyages in the late 1400 's. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not set a single foot on these grounds, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land.     Should a man whose actions created a wave of genocide and killed thousands of innocent natives be considered a hero? Christopher Columbus found the Americas, but today he takes credit for discovering a new world. Native Americans had been living in civilizations across North and South America long before Columbus had "discovered" it.     Ferdinand and Isabella are a king and queen of Spain in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries that united their kingdom and also supported the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus.
