Who Is Armand In Desiree's Baby
I think Armand Aubigny is one of major character in the story. Because if there are no Armand in the story, then the conflict will not be until the climax, or maybe there would be no conflict at all. In the story, Armand had a conflict with his wife, Desiree. Before we get to the main conflict, yes, I think when Armand had a quarrel with Desiree about Desiree’s baby is the main conflict, first, I will lead you to the characterization of Armand Aubigny.

“It was no wonder, when she stood one day against the stone pillar in whose shadow she had lain asleep, eighteen years before, that Armand Aubigny riding by and seeing her there, had fallen in love with her.”

Armand is a man who fell in love with Desiree. He has a light skin and handsome but his mother having black skin. His mother died when he was eight. He didn’t remember her mother have a black skin, maybe because his light skin. I can say that Armand is a racist, because he has strict rules to his slaves. And his slaves are Negrillon. Chopin changed the way Madame Valmondé thought about herself, when her husband thought that she had not been white when they realized that the baby was not white;although it was not true.     With the use of many symbols in her story, Chopin gives the audience insight into the depths of her work. Examples of this symbolism include the stone pillar, La Blanche’s cabin, and the bonfire. The stone pillar that Desiree was found lying upon by Armand when he had first “fallen in love with her”(1) was used to show her desolate background.     In the story of “Desiree’s baby”, there are discriminations lead to Desiree’s death which are racism and gender discrimination. In 17th century, women had low status and they cannot get enough respect. Story told “‘Good-by, Armand’, she moaned. He did not answer her. That was his last blow at fate.”(Kate Chopin 6) This sentence shows the indifferent attitude of Desiree’s husband, which is a pervasive social problem. Desiree’ husband found out that their baby was not white and he asked Desiree to leave. Desiree could not revolt, though her husband used cold violence treatment to her.
