While You Were Sleeping Analysis
The film “While You Were Sleeping” takes place in the 1990s in Chicago. This film was directed by Jon Turteltaub and had two screenwriters, Daniel G. Sullivan and Fredric Lebow. The story starts with Lucy Eleanor Moderatz at her booth at the train station or her job. She would see Peter Callaghan every day and she soon fell in love with him. One day she saw Peter get pushed onto the train tracks, jumps onto the tracks, and saves Peter from being crushed by a train. Peter went into a coma because of the head injury he sustained from the fall onto the train tracks and when he was taken to the hospital, Lucy couldn’t see him because she wasn’t family. A miscommunication happened at the hospital and Peter’s family were led to the think that Lucy …show more content…
The given circumstances for Lucy are her parents are dead, she’s in love with a man that she’s never talked to, and she’s lonely. The given circumstances for Peter is that he is rich and takes the train. The given circumstances for Jack are that he doesn’t want the family business his father made. Lucy lives in a little apartment, Peter lives in a big elegant apartment, and Jack’s home was never brought up or shown in the film. Lucy’s mental and physical health statuses are both fine, but she is a lonely woman. Peter’s mental health is questioned when he gets amnesia because he doesn’t remember Lucy, but he really never met her; his physical health is okay in the beginning because he was in a coma but was doing fine when he was in it. At the end of the film, he was perfectly fine because he wasn’t in a coma anymore and he didn’t have anything such as amnesia like everyone thought. Jack’s mental and physical health statuses are better than his brother and Lucy’s. Jack and the rest of his and Peter’s family are Catholics. Lucy is around 5’7 with brown, mid length hair, brown eyes, she always has some type of sweater on, and is in her late twenties. Peter is around 5’9 with blue eyes, brown hair, a dimple on each cheek, and is in his early thirties. Jack is around 6’2 with greenish blue eyes dirty blonde hair, and in his earlier thirties. Peter is the only main character with …show more content…
The quality of the acting was impressive; the actors made me get tears of happiness and get mad when Lucy, and Jack, wouldn’t tell each other they wanted to be together. All the subtle hints that were put into the movie were picked up on which helped the audience to understand where the story was going. The quality of the actors was incredible; I felt like I was in the movie watching what was going on with the family and Lucy. In the film, the main characters were all played by well-rounded actors that can pull and intrigue the audience and their emotions. Lucy Moderatz was played by Sandra Bullock, Jack Callaghan was played by Bill Pullman, and Peter Callaghan was played by Peter Gallagher. The actors brought out many emotions from the audience, including myself, and brought them into the story.
The director’s ability to tell this story was exquisite. The director helped the actors be able to grab the audience’s attention and pull their emotions in while they were at it. The audience was able to follow the storyline without any confusion at

The movie was great because how they acted their roles were exceptional. Honestly, the roles given to them are really hard because they will handle all the emotional and physical challenges of their roles. You really need a good actors to be able to act it out, and so they did. It was so moving, since you are able to see hopeless people who as much as possible keep their selves positive and enthusiastic in life. It is directed by Penny Marshall, the film was produced by…

The producers couldn’t have hired better actors for the roles of Thomas and Victor and the script was as if it wasn’t even a script. It seemed like it just came so naturally to the characters. If someone came to me asking for examples of a movie with really good acting, I would probably recommend this movie, but otherwise. I would say not to waste your time and watch something more enjoyable, like the romantic comedy “The Wedding…

No doubt that the content is the most important thing, so how can it be a good performance when the actors failed to deliver their only task? Which was to make the audience believe, believe in what they are saying is true. Many actors failed in delivering their feelings or the feelings of the character they were acting as for the matter. When scenes call for sadness or even a hint of tear, actors would give a sad-mocking expression like someone would in front of their mother to frame their brother whom did not do anything. Not the feeling of a lost of a friend that was known to everyone, that was seen by everyone, growing up or played with. And in addition although the impression of the southern accent was a good attempt, many actors did it and many did not, when they were native of the land. Instead of letting the audience feeling empathy and recognition actors gave the audience an agony of confusion, lost and at some point even bored throughout the…

One very notable performance for me was how quickly the more tame Reverend was able to switch characters and become his hot-tempered son Luke, who wasn’t afraid to do whatever it took to achieve justice. The difference between these two characters was like hot and cold and the actor who played both was able to change between characters fairly quickly so that it was almost difficult to tell that it was the same person playing a different character. I also found the scenes after Portia had been shot to be very moving and I really felt like the actors gave it their all. They were able to embrace the agony of not knowing if your child is going to make it and the difficulty of dealing with people trying to pity you.…

When I walked into the movie theater, there were a good amount of people that came to see it. They all seemed to have a feeling of anticipation for this movie adaptation of the novel. I bet that most of the people that were in the theater the night that I went to watch it all read the book about, so they know what they are getting into and the book has been out for a while so needed to have established some sense of familiarity with the movie. I noticed a group of people that were commenting on how it would be a spectacular movie adaptation is going to be, they were in for a special treat. I went to see this movie with my girlfriend, since she is an action movie sci-fi buff, she was very respectful and let me analyze and critique this movie for this essay. I went to Gateway during the middle of the week on a day I didn’t have homework, I made it into a date night. It wasn’t opening night, since I didn’t realize this movie was assigned until later in the week. The mood of the crowd was full of anticipation and then regret at the end of the movie. I fitted in with the crowd since I knew the plot behind this movie. I was comfortable with the whole production since I was ready for whatever this movie was going to throw at me.…

Within this film it is clear that the styles of narration used by the screenwriter's are classic Hollywood narrative styles, which is when there is a "strong central protagonist and neatly resolved climax" (Bordwell and Thompson, 2005). Another way of proving that this is a classic narrated Hollywood film is by looking at what Bordwell (2005), states as the action revolving around a central character that by the end of the film fulfills his/her goal. By looking at all of the above, the point argued in this essay is clear that this film is a typical Hollywood narrated film, even though there are some techniques used by the screenwriters and directors that lean towards the way non Hollywood films are narrated.…

The characters, which were beautifully portrayed, are one of the many reasons this film worked so well. Seeing Stanley’s conversations with his wife and brother made the audience feel like Stanley was their personal friend. The genuine concern his family had for his well-being made the audience worry about Stanley as well. Knowing how much his family cared about him made the audience wish they could comfort the family after his death. These characters also made the audience wonder what they would do if this happened to someone they knew.…
