Where Have The Good Men Gone Summary
After reading the article “Where Have The Good Men Gone?” my reaction to it is somewhat surprised and understandable. Today, young men rely on their parents more than back then, for money and a place to live. Kay S. Hymowitz states that young men in their twenties behave like adolescents during their years in college. It is true that most young men and women are “job hopping” in order to find their passion and what they like, which delays the path to adulthood. However, this is not true for every man in the world, since it can also apply to women as well. Hymowitz states that women are better than men in this way, and this is somewhat true. However, no matter what, if someone is determined, they would always worked hard to reach their goals and earn their achievements …show more content…
Antolini made a “flitty” advance towards Holden. This leads to some believing that Mr. Antolini is gay, while others believe he is not. When Mr. Antolini pats Holden’s head while Holden was sleeping, Holden then wakes up and freaks out. He assumes that Mr. Antolini was making an advance at him and runs off. However, in my opinion, I believe that he did not make an advance but was just doing it to show that he cares about Holden and his well-being. When Holden visits him, he gives Holden advice on life and what Holden should be doing instead of just moping around. He tells Holden that there is a time and place for everything, and his job is continue high school and not give up. He also tells Holden to not linger on about the past and not to give up on life just because someone he loves died. He encourages Holden to continue and keep going to school. By his actions, this can be interpreted that Mr. Antolini does actually care for Holden and wants what is best for him. By “patting” Holden’s head, it is an action that shows how Mr. Antolini can be a father figure to Holden by telling him what he should do and caring about

Antolini pats him on the head and when Holden ‘called ’Lillian Simmon’s boyfriend, “Commander Blob”. For instance, Holden is critical of his older brother’s old girlfriend’s boyfriend, an army guy. At the bar, Holden notices Lillian Simmon’s boyfriend, an army guy, “ His name was Commander Blob or something. He was one of those guys that think they are being a pansy if they don’t break around forty bones” (87). Using the hyperbole of breaking around forty bones the reader can clearly see Holden’s criticism towards an army guy who he named Commander Blob. Holden believes “Commander Blob” is just like any other army guy with no personality, who will be “pansy”,a coward if they do not squeeze a person's hand hard enough; in reality Lillian Simmon’s boyfriend is a relatable person since he agrees with Holden in the idea that no one can stand Lillian. As a result, readers find Holden unsympathetic because society wants people to get to know them without judging them. Furthermore, Holden believes that Mr. Antolini, a teacher at Elkton Hills is gay solely because his wife is much older than him and he pats Holden on the head while he was sleeping. When Holden was at Mr. Antolini’s house, Mr. Antolini offers Holden some brotherly advice, then while sleeping at Mr. Antolini’s house he wakes up to this disturbing situation, “What he [Mr. Antolini] was doing was, he was sitting…

He acts this way because Holden is always alone and have no family to support him except his younger sister, Phoebe. Something that is repeated constantly throughout the novel is, “Jane keeping her kings in the back row.” This symbol shows that Holden cannot separate the past from the present time. Holden thinks this way because he was always necking with Jane when they were young. He also thinks this way because of his immaturity of always wanting to have sex and always wanting to be a kid instead of growing up to is an adult. Finally his thoughts always want to be with Jane, but because of his immaturity Jane doesn’t choose him. Therefore, Holden acts immature towards others because he has been expelled from four different schools and no one is there to teach him his manners and to discipline…

Explanation: By this point in the novel, the reader might gather that Holden has a mental disorder. This is clear to the reader when Mr. Antolini talks to Holden about planning his future and overcoming his condition. Specifically, Holden could possibly have Schizophrenia. In “Why Men Still Can’t Have It All” by Richard Dorment, the author primarily focuses on the idea on how men cannot “have it all” either, due to the competing demands of work and home being even harsher or the same as women. He argues that men are more than ever facing a problem of balancing work and home life, as men now clean and cook more than they did 50 years ago. He states that while men still have to work the long hours they do, they come home to a new set of expectations and are ridiculed if they don't exceed them. An example of these expectations are that men are supposed to have this manly nothing and support the family financially, yet when they ask for leave they suffer “a femininity stigma” which robs a man of his masculinity.…

When Holden was in New York, he purchased the red hat when he got out of the subway in a sporting goods store. He wears his hat by swinging the peaks around the back. Holden always wears his in different ways, either the correct way or backwards. The hat symbolizes uniqueness, individuality, and confidence. When he wears it towards the back means that he is frustrated or mad. His red hunting has is red with long peaks. The purpose of the hat is to make himself comfortable through tough moments. “The way I wore it, I swung the old peak way around to the back—very corny, I'll admit, but I liked it that way. I looked good in it that way. “ “I pulled the peaks towards the front allof a sudden, for a change. I was…

‘’Where Have the Good Men Gone?’’ is what Kay Hymowitz wants to know in her latest Wall St. Journal, published on February 19th 2011. Her argument, which appears to be largely based on Judd Apatow movies, is that young American men do not grow up. Her other book, “Manning Up” received brilliant reviews, saying it was ‘’fascinating’’ and ‘’brutally honest’’. ‘’Where Have the Good Men Gone’’ even formed part of a live chat involving men and women debating about this controversial topic; some agreeing, some disagreeing and plenty caught in between.…

    2. Holden likes Mr. Antolini because Holden and Mr. Antolini have been friends a long time and are close. Holden considers Mr.Antolini as nice and the best teacher that he has even had. Holden was able to talk to him as he would a friend. Also the incident with James Castle might have proved to Holden that Mr.Antolini wasn’t a phone and didn’t care about appearances (he didn’t care if his jacket got bloody). Mr. Antolini talks about a fall in Holden’s future. This is kind of parallel to Holden’s image of the “catcher in the rye”. I do think Mr.Antolini’s predictions are correct. The fall that Mr.Antolini describes is the fall that will come if Holden refuses to grow up. His forceful criticism on Holden forces him to come to terms with his own problems.…

In the article “Where Have the Good Men Gone?,” Kay Hymowitz has very good points. I agree with most of the things she has to say. Our generation is very different from every other generation. I feel like not only men but women are lazy too. We were all raised different and raised with very different morals. As stated in the article men used to have their things together by the age of 20. Already married with children and in college on their way to getting a good job, now they want to sit around with their friends drink some beer and play video games. The article says “I had to stop several times while reading and think: Wait, did I date this same guy?” (Hymowitz 491). Not only do I have experiences with this quote, I have many friends that feel the same way.…

Holden is so caught up in all the “phonies” and people around him that annoy him ,and he ends up having a hard time focusing and taking care of himself. Everyone around him annoys him except for those who truly understand him, like Phoebe and Jane. Many people in the novel do not understand that Holden is not being raised in the environment he needs to actually learn to grow up. He requires a stable unchanging environment, in which he is not receiving because his parents are not around to guide him. Instead, they continue to send Holden to schools in which he cannot completely handle because he is surrounded by tons of people who irritate him. He latches on to his memories though, which is why he is thrilled when Stradlater has a date with Jane, because Jane means the world to him. Holden has a hard time accepting the fact things are constantly changing around him. Part of the reason for why Holden is caught in his childhood is for the reason that he wants to revisit all of the good times that he had with Allie. This is described in, “Like everybody else in the book, Antolini fails to see what ails Holden is the death of his brother, Allie, plus parental neglect. (Marks 507).…

Although she declines his offer it shows that Holden still has some growing to do to become an adult. After Holden hangs up on Faith, Holden goes down to Lavender Room in the hotel. He sits at the bar, but the bartender realizes that Holden is a minor and refuses to serve him. Although this seems small it has a greater meaning as the story purpose later on. After the bartender refuses to serve Holden he begins to flirt and dance with three older women. He begins to feel a sense of “Fake Love” with one of the women after he sees how well she dances. After Holden reveals to the women how old he is the three women leave making Holden responsible for the bill. Afterwards, Holden goes out to the lobby, he starts to think about Jane Gallagher and, in a flashback, recounts how he got to know her. This shows how Holden is reflecting upon things that he has done when he was a child. This shows how Holden is starting to understand that he is growing up. He begins to reminisce about his childhood and he begins to remember how he had meet Jane. He remembers how they played golf, checkers, and held hands at the movies. He remembers how one day when they were playing checkers and her father came on the ponch and when he left she began to start crying. Holden had moved to sit beside her and comfort her. This is a great example of how Holden really care about things even though he tries to hide it. He kissed her all over her face but, she wouldn’t let him…

    A Few Good Men Analysis

All throughout time everyday people have chosen to completely neglect their values and morals when given orders to do a certain task. People have been placed in the difficult situation to either obey inhumane orders of a person in authority or disobey and receive punishment. One such example of this can be seen in the Holocaust when millions of Jews were murdered because of military orders. Were the people who carried out the slaughter of the Jews ruthless in nature or were they responding normally like any other human being when given an order by an authority figure? A movie titled A Few Good Men sheds light on this question with the help of Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo's research on obedience…

In the early 1900’s the man was seen as the intellectual individual who takes care of their wife and family, who arrives home with the money and who was the supplier. However during the 1930’s this typical idea of the man’s role was extremely hard to keep ahold of due to The Great Depression. While the average woman worked on household dynamics and keeping the family afloat, the man was out looking for a job, or struggling to keep his current job. As a result, the average male came home at the end of the day exhausted and mentally drained.…

    Gender Roles

Society has many expectations on men; men are supposed to be brave and stronger than woman. An article on The Social Roles of Men and Women states “It is not enough for a man to be male; he also has to appear masculine.” People believe that men should be bold, strong, and powerful but that’s not always the case. Men should act the way they want! Just because society or their parents expect them to be masculine doesn’t mean they have to. Another example from The Social Roles of Men and Women adds “Traditionally, fathers teach boys how to fix and build things.” I’m sure everyone expects men to teach their sons how to fix or build things. Some fathers don’t even follow this concept with their sons. Sometimes when these kids grow up and don’t know how to build or fix things there are looked at differently as if they are worthless. Moreover from a different article Gender and Society says "Men have always been afraid that women could get along without them." This quote is basically stating that men think that women can live without them, when in reality they can. Men are afraid of this because they believe that women should stay home, keep the house clean and have dinner waiting for them once they come back from work. Men shouldn’t be afraid that women can be independent; I think it’s great that women can be independent and not rely on anyone but themselves.…
