My dream as a child
We are usually asked this question very early in life: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” is one of the most popular questions asked by your parents or relatives. Parents usually ask this question to their children to encourage their kids about their future. It seems like an easy question, but its not. Not many children know what they want to be when they grow up. Many of us say those careers that we think are the most popular such as; police officer, firefighter, nurse, teacher, or a doctor. I can remember when my parents would ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The first thing that came to my mind was a police officer and a dancer. All I knew was that I wanted to be a police officer because I wanted to be like my dad and a dancer because I wanted to teach people how dance. Unfortunately, as I grew up, I came to realize that it would take much effort to obtain a diploma in both of those professions. No one ever mentioned the hard work or how long it actually takes to become a police officer or a professional dancer. All I heard was, “You can become whatever you want.”
Once I got out of high school I was not sure what I wanted to pursue as a career, the only thing I knew was that I did not wanted to become a police officer. Even though I was an adult, I was unsure of what I wanted to pursue as a career. It was when I was in my third year of college when I decided to get a major in Human Resource Development and a minor in Dance. Once I got out of high school I was not sure what I wanted to pursue as a career, the only thing I knew was that I did not wanted to become a police officer. Even though I was an adult, I was unsure of what I wanted to pursue as a career. I never gave up on the idea of becoming a dancer. My mother knew I was going to be a dancer. She still remembers how I used to move, almost all the time inside her belly.

Only if they make space food tastier. Now I’m about to be one of many so-called “grown-ups” and I finally have the answer. I want to help people. I will help people. I am going to be a social worker.…

Most fourteen year olds have no idea what they want to be when they grow up. I guess you could say I fell into this same category. That is, until my Careers teacher gave me a life changing assignment. For this assignment, I had to pick a career and job shadow a person in that profession. I had no idea what direction to turn. Then, one day while sitting in the dental chair waiting for my dentist, I began mulling over different career possibilities. When my dentist came in to finish my exam, it suddenly crossed my mind that maybe dentistry was a possibility. I started paying attention to what he was doing and soon realized that this was something I wanted to learn more about. I remember how excited I was when I told my mom I had found the perfect person for my assignment.…

I recall being asked by my relatives: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and instead of an answer I would give them a blank stare. I had no idea how to respond. Not because there was nothing I found appealing, but because I felt passionate about too many things. I loved music, math, design, helping others, working with kids, analyzing situations and solving problems. There were to many career paths that I liked, but it always seemed to me that in order to follow one I would have to give up the rest.…

I have always been the “caretaker” in my family. If someone were hurting, he or she came to me and told me his or her symptoms, and I did my research and told them what I thought about it. Before that, when I was about three years old, I took care of my newborn baby sister. My mama was sick, and my step dad was at work, so I took care of my sister. People ask kids what they want to be when they grow up, and they always get some crazy answer like a movie star. When my mama asked me, I said a doctor. I have since learned that doctors do make a lot of money, but they spend most of it on insurance. My career goal has changed; now I want to be a nurse of some kind, but it is still in the medical field. My grandma said that I like school so much that I will not stop going until I become a doctor. She was right about many things, but I am not so sure about that one. A Registered Nurse (RN) is a good career with a wonderful history, and a nice salary, but you need specific qualities to be an RN.…

As a child everyone always asks, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I used to hate the question just because I never had an answer.
