What I Have Learned, Looking Back
Dear Prof. Pretorius,
I passed this course with flying colours because I learned to study smarter, not necessarily harder. I now realise that I haven’t always studied correctly. When I started this course, I thought I knew exactly what terms such as “competitive advantage” and “positioning” meant…but I soon found out that I had so much to learn. I have made mistakes, but as Hugh White said "When you make a mistake, don't look back at it long. Take the reason of the thing into your mind and then look forward. Mistakes are lessons of wisdom. The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power."
In my semester test, I got 64%. I then knew that it was time to be much more disciplined and to manage my time more effectively and efficiently. I had learned that my best resource at University was my professor. There is a Chinese proverb that says “A single conversation with a wise man is better than ten years of study.” You provided me with insight that couldn’t be gained from reading the text book. I took notes like a mad person in class. Then, when the exam came, I knew that I could do better than my semester test mark. So I studied smarter, made reading and analysing my new friend, and received 95%. It can be done. I received the award for Best Achiever in the subject by the end of the semester.
As soon as I saw an improvement in my grades, the usage of the skills acquired in this course has been essential in my academic and personal life. By applying everything that I have learned, I am now able to take any work that I have learned and apply it. I would like to share some of the amazing experiences and results that I have gotten by applying the many insights that I have gained in this course. Additional to the knowledge I have gained, I have gained valuable people-skills. I learned how to work in a team, and respect and value the opinions of others as much as I value my own. I found that sometimes others might look at things differently, but they were not
