What You Eat Is Your Business Radley Balko Summary
Nutrition has become a popular debate within the last twenty years. Policy analyst Radley Balko explores how government intervention affects our diet. In Balko’s article “What You Eat Is Your Business”, Balko discusses why he dislikes the policies being passed that monitor the public's intake of unhealthy food. Balko chooses to pull attention away from the outcome these policies will have on health, and instead focus on the financial ramifications that follow major policy changes.
When writing this article, Balko targeted several audiences. The first and most significant group was those within the public who deem themselves healthy. Balko argues that it is unfair to make fit and healthy Americans pay for obese Americans to receive help. The other major target audience is Policymakers. Balko’s article highlights a topic that still holds relevance today, however, the specifics of the article may no longer be applicable to current policy. People reading this article thirteen years on may use the article to reflect on past debates and opinions, but recognize the limited relevance factually.
In the fourth paragraph Balko writes “For decades now, America’s health care system has been migrating toward socialism”. The word “Socialism” can have a positive connotation to some and a negative connotation to others, but in the article Balko assumes the reader will read this word as negative. By doing this, Balko plays on the audience's emotions which allows him to replace evidence with opinion and still get a response from the reader. A second example of using emotion to reach the audience is when Balko uses “We’re” in paragraph five. “We’re” implies that the reader is included in Balko’s

    Though Zinczenko and Balko take different approaches on who should be blamed for obesity, they are actually in agreement that there is definitely a personal responsibility associated with obesity. Balko argues that it’s the individual’s responsibility to make healthy choices, while Zinczenko argues parents don’t have enough time to pick up healthy food for themselves nor for their children’s. Thereby selecting fast food is the easy way out. Balko is absolutely right it is an individual responsibility for a healthier choice of food. In my opinion I believe that people use “not enough time” as an excuse to eat out. Eating healthy is as easy as 1,2,3 thought some people may not be able to afford a salad from a fancy restaurant or low fat meals they can definitely make themselves a sandwich and pack some fruits and take it as a lunch meal for themselves and their children’s. Preparing a sandwich should only take a minute or two rather then driving up and down the block looking for “food” which in reality they looking for Mac Donald or Burger King instead of wasting the money on fast food restaurant people should consider using that money and buying a loaf of bread, salad, and cracker for there next day meal. If people would do this on a daily basic fast food restaurant wouldn’t exists anymore.…

    David Zinczenko is the editor-in-chief of Men’s Health magazine and the author of numerous best-selling books. Zinczenko is a man known for his work; his work and credibility shines bright because he has contributed op-ed essays to the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today. He has also appeared on Oprah, Ellen, 20/20, and Good Morning America. The fact that he is so accomplished in the area of eating healthy shows just how credible he is when it comes to discussing fast food vs. the eater. Zinczenko believes that the fast food industry is partly at fault for the growing rate of obesity. Although Zinczenko’s background and accomplishments gives us the evidence we need to know in order to trust his judgments, his emotional way of getting his points across make a difference as well. In the beginning of the essay, Zinczenko tells us about himself and how he grew up with troubled parents who weren’t together, and with very little options of what to eat for lunch and dinner every day. He explains that his options were mainly fast food, which caused him to be an overweight teenager. In other words, he uses his story of himself as a teenager growing up with family problems to draw people in and get them to sympathize with the overweight teenagers and get them to see that it is not all their fault and that it is, in fact, partly the fast food industry’s fault. One of his final arguments is that without warning labels on fast food industry products, we will see more sick, obese children and more angry parents.…

    Americans are heavier than ever before and, according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) approximately 127 million adults in the U.S. are overweight, 60 million adults are obese, and 9 million adults are morbidly obese. Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties during sleep, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis. It can be caused by many reasons. One obvious reason is the rise in fast food consumption that companies are so adamant on pushing the public to buy, especially children.
