High-Tech Sweat shops What kinds of unethical and illegal kinds of behaviors do high-tech sweatshop companies engage in? What criteria should these companies use to decide if they are treating their overseas employees fairly? How would you characterize the stance on social responsibility of companies that function as body shops? In what ways can developing an ethical approach to managing outsourcing - whether inside the United States or in countries abroad - affect the well-being and performance of both employees and the companies they work for? Unethical or illegal behaviors such as deceit, blackmail, abuse, greed, theft, child labor, and misrepresentation are just a few of a long list of behaviors high-tech sweatshops indulge in. Desiring to improve quality of life and improve earning conditions that do away the need for child labor, these companies should pay a higher than local wage, yet still profiting, and require age limitations for employees. Some cultures accept the concept that children are born to support the parent. These concepts can be changed over time when the parent is offered a life supporting wage available only to adults. There would not be a need for the parent to require a child to work for them. Companies utilizing overseas labor should assist locals with establishing schools to improve next generation’s earning abilities and become a larger resource.     In my opinion, the best way to reduce child labor for multinational corporations is to help the host nations in stressing the value of education to its citizens and improving educational opportunities such as better schools for its children. At the same time, the companies should strengthen its screening process to ensure that they are not hiring children. Just as it states in our text “Since poverty is synonymous with child labor, if a company pays higher wages, it can have a beneficial effect in raising local living standards and hence reducing the need for children to be employed” (Fieser, Moseley, 2012, p8.3). The same jobs that are using child labor could be given to able adults. From my ethical perspective, there needs to be balance in employing children. School should be the first priority for children yet they should also be allowed to partake in some form of regulated part time work in order to give them some experience and prepare them for the working world. Many teenagers graduate from high school and are unprepared for the transition from full time school to fulltime work. The ethical perspective of the group with which I belong to (African American), education is a priority however, young adults need a part time job in order to prepare them for their adult life and instill responsibility in them. As noted in the text “Covert child labor involves either participating in a family-run, income-generating activity, such as farming or retailing, or replacing the child’s parents in performing household chores such as cooking, cleaning, fetching water, and gathering fuel” (Cigno, 2012, p 65).     This is a game in which everyone involved wins; except the innocent kids. Working long hours at a young age can have a tremendous negative impact in children over time. Not to mention the mental turmoil they face as they are pressured to work at a fast pace to get work done in a short amount of time. While looking for a solution, we must first figure out why we have the problem in the first place. Child labor practices are still prevalent because as companies expand, they must employ more laborers to keep up with demand. Children workers are obedient, making them easy to manage and because supply chains are so complex, most kids are able to slip under the radar without a problem. One of the common myths often discussed is that those in improvised households depend on their children’s income as a means of survival. This is a misconception that does not solve the problem, but instead makes it worse. When children begin working at a young age they often do not have the opportunity to receive an education, this then becomes a cycle that is hard to break and the issue gets passed on to the next generation. In an article presented by Caitlin Ryan, a public policy candidate at Harvard University who has experience working with human rights organizations she blames poverty for the issue, while examining ways to eliminate child labor using work study programs (Ryan 92). This program works by having kids work a few days a month in safe conditions, in return employers pay for 70 percent of education costs. A sponsorship programs like this will help families receive much-needed income, while keeping kids in school.     For decades international companies, such as Nike Corporation (Nike), have been highly criticized for employing children under the age of 18 in overseas factories, resulting in an ethical dilemma. Nike manufactures a wide-range of sports products including shoes, apparel, and equipment in Vietnam. As permitted by Vietnamese law and labor regulations, Vietnamese subcontractors are permitted to employ children between the ages of 15 and 18 within their factories. This fact has infuriated children’s rights activists in the United States (U.S.) who feel that Nike is exploiting children in Vietnam to increase revenue. These activists protest the employment of children under the age of 18, and argue that children would have an opportunity to attend school and further their education if they are not forced to work. An opposing view of this argument is that children who accept employment within Vietnamese factories are doing so out of their own free will and feel fortunate to be earning an income to help contribute to the welfare of their family. Furthermore, secondary education in Vietnam is not free as in the U.S.; therefore, children who accept employment are most likely in a financial deficit and would likely not be able to afford to get a secondary education even if they had the time to attend. If Nike were to stop employing children under the age of 18, these children would be forced to resort to finding another source of income- likely earning a much smaller wage- in potentially harmful conditions with harsh elements such as prostitution or grueling agricultural farming.
