The use of praise and encouragement can be very productive in helping to promote positive behaviour. Being consistent allows for the student to understand what is and is not considered positive behaviour. The schools policy and guidelines regarding behaviour should be followed at all times. Reward systems are helpful in promoting positive behaviour, rewards should be relevant and consistent, taking into account the pupils needs and circumstances. Involving students in discussions of what rewards are appropriate and what the rewards are given for, will also help them towards promoting more positive behaviours as then they have a voice and can express their understanding of what positive behaviour is. It is important that the pupil understands what is and is not positive behaviour reward systems and being clear in your expectations aids this. Using a calm and positive approach at all times is helpful when dealing with challenging behaviours, as it allows for expectations to be understood, and the explanations of why the behaviour was not acceptable. It is important at this point to understand that all students develop emotionally different and to take this into account.
