“What Patriotism Means to Me”
Does Patriotism still matter anymore? Or, is it just the national anthem playing before a sports game, saying the Pledge of Allegiance at school in the mornings? Or, is it just the celebrating of holidays that honor our armed forces? Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary says that patriotism is the “Love some people feel for their country.” Personally, I think that a person with great patriotism has love, support, serves for their country.
“Give me liberty or give me death!” Many years ago, when our country was still being formed, Patrick Henry made this statement. Can’t you feel the excitement of this quote? If someone had the guts to say that, they obviously love their country and want what’s best for it! In my opinion, a true patriot loves his country and will stick up for it anytime.
Many years ago Mark Twain, a famous writer, said “Patriotism is supporting your country all the time and when your government deserves it.” Support is a key trait in being a true patriot towards one’s country. Even though our government isn’t in the best place right now, we still support it. My church even prays for the government every Sunday morning.
Finally, I think a great patriot is one who serves for his country. Think about how much our armed forces risk for our nation to be free. It has to take a lot or courage to step up and leave your family to put your life out on the line to fight for our nation’s freedom. Those are the guys that we really need to respect. They rightfully deserve it as well. While we are at home relaxing on our couches or doing whatever we want to do, they are out on their feet preserving our freedom.
