What Makes the Super Bowl So Super?
"Super Sunday" is able to attract greater audiences to the annual event than any other television event, but how? Are the teams matching up better? Are the games becoming more competitive? I feel the enormous number of viewers each year has nothing to do with the game. The NFL has incorporated many other aspects to the championship night, including pre-game entertainment, National Anthem renditions, glamorous half-time shows, and hilarious commercials, which all have helped the Super Bowl appeal to a broader group of viewers. Because of this broader group of viewers, the event has turned into one of the biggest social events of the year. Many people watch the game with a group of friends or at a party, and many people place money wages on the game. The NFL being able to appeal to a broader group of vastly unique viewers is the ultimate reason why, in my mind, the Super Bowl has become such a popular culture icon. Entertainment in the early days almost always was put on by university band programs. In the early years, band programs from universities such as the University of Arizona and Grambling University (Super Bowl I,) Southern University and Northeast Missouri College (Super Bowl V,) and University of Michigan (Super Bowl VII,) performed during the pre-game. The National Anthem took the same look in the early years, with the anthem being performed by school band programs from Universities such as Arizona and Michigan (Super Bowl I,) and Grambling (Super Bowl II and IX.)
As the years progressed though, pop culture increasingly became the focus of the pre-game festivities. Super Bowl XXXI was kicked off by Los Del Rio, who performed "Macarena," which was a dance fad that became popular in the early to mid 1990 's. In addition, Super Bowl XXXIV was a "Tribute to Great American Music of the 20th Century." Most recently, Super Bowl XXXIX 's

    Revenue sharing is what made the NFL a powerful and economically successful sports business model for these times. The then commissioner Pete Rozelle persuaded NFL governors to share the greater part of their revenues equally. With this method there wasn't much in it for big-market teams, but by agreeing to the system of socialism and by protecting the competitiveness of small-market teams such as Green Bay, they built the idea for the great commercial power it has become. Revenue sharing was a brilliant idea because it worked. It succeeded because network television sports were growing fast and massive; also football games were perfect TV property.     The hype of the Super Bowl was not better than the actual game. The game had a few surprises added to it such as the blackout, Beyoncé’s great performance, and the shocking comeback from the San Francisco 49ers towards the end of the game, making the game much more enjoyable. Also, I would have to say the game was better than the ads as well. The 49ers made a great game at the end, although there were some good emotional and humorous ads. The cost of these ads in this year’s Super Bowl is $3.8 million for a 30-second spot. As for last year’s, it cost $3.5 million. When producing the ads for the Super Bowl, there were advertisements before the game began and I believe that was to tell the viewers to go and out and buy their products so they can have them while watching the game. There were also ads during the game and that was to remind the viewers what they have in their pantry when they went out to buy it prior to the game. Lastly, there were ads after the game and that was to make the viewer to buy the products when they had time to get it. The Super Bowl’s ads were more emotional this year displaying the economic problems that Americans have been facing lately. The ad “God Made the Farmer” made people stop and realize the condition the economy is in and the violent actions that have been happening. Moreover, my favorite ad would have to be Taco Bell’s. It was humorous and amusing showing the older generation going out and having fun like teenagers. It was relatable to the younger generation because it was things that teenagers do all the time. It made every generation laugh, old and young, which made it a successful commercial. My least favorite advertisement would be Go Daddy’s. It showed a beautiful blonde kissing a nerdy guy, which grossed many viewers out including me. It used sexual elements but not successfully appealing to the viewers.     This is mainly because there is a requirement to project creative, socio-cultural, and technological aspects, especially when it comes to the live telecast of an event such as Super Bowl. The live telecast of a grand event such as Super Bowl has always been done by leading sports channels such as ESPN and CNBC. It is also an important factor that many of the creative techniques and tools for covering big sports event was initially developed by these channels, in order to telecast them in the most creative and stylized manner. For this reason, there is always a pressure of industry standard over them to create contents that are above average for the world and the American audience. The effort and skills used in covering the Super Bowl are evident in the video, especially through the usage of multi-camera settings, appropriate color tones, and even though the correct positioning of the cameras during the entire event. David Rowe has asserted in his work ‘Sports, culture and media’ that it is extremely difficult even to imagine a sports event without multiple camera angles (53). And a similar notion was put forth by Barbara Morris and Joel Nydahl, as they asserted the multi-camera system has the capability to bifurcate a single action into differentiated indistinguishable parts of dramatic actions. Therefore, through this factors it becomes clear that there is an inequitable pressure on the media-producers to present the sports event in a spectacular and dramatic way possible for the audience. On another side, the technological aspect can also be perceived in the video through the usage much high-end equipment that they use during the events in order to make these multiple- angle possible and above all spectacular (eg: the usage steady cams in the most skilled way to cover the ground happenings in the Super Bowl…
