The overall structure and plot of the story plays a part in how Wolff viewed his own life within the characters. It opens with a simple yet intriguing statement: "Tub had been waiting for an hour in the falling snow" (Wolff 1). Immediately, this hook does its job drawing the reader into the story and making him wonder what is going on. In the same paragraph we find that Tub is walking down the street, carrying a rifle and seemingly, shooting the breeze. But then a car comes from nowhere, nearly killing Tub and forcing him to leap off the roadside. Inside the truck, Tub's friends, Kenny and Frank, wait laughing at the apparent "joke" that they had just played. Tub doesn't seem quite as amused, stating, "You could've killed me!" (Wolff 5). Then, the three friends begin to make their way towards the woods to go hunting for…

In this short passage, Atwood’s character ‘George’, is emphasised to be a very simple and non-complex man. Through this presentation of him, we are able to identify some of the key aspects of the Wilderness Paradigm in Canada. The passage refers to George as a “conservative man” who “loves traditions” which some may argue are characteristics of a typical native Canadian. His simplicity can be emphasised through the use of short sentences which Atwood purposely uses when she writes “Then he stubs out his cigarette, downs the heel of his Scotch and hauls himself out of the deck chair”. The heavily punctuated paragraph slows down the readers reading of the passage thus suggesting George’s character is as simple as the sentence structure used. It is at this point in the passage where Atwood draws on George’s simplicity to portray a wider message from the piece. Here, Atwood criticises the urban world outside of the beautiful landscape which…

the beginning when Willy and Linda bought their house, their was a lot of empty space. However, as time passed the was less and less of empty space due to apartment buildings being built. With less and less space there was more noise. Miller use the space as a metaphor because when Willy first bought the house there was a lot of empty space for his dreams to run wide, but now there isn’t any space for dreams to run wide. This plays a role in why Willy wants to commit suicide, he is stuck in the past and suffers in the present. Another present in the play are the seeds that Willy tries to plant many times over and over again, but the seeds won’t grow. The seeds are metaphor to his family legacy which is trying to grow, but it is already too…

Half way through the first act, the reader hears something about Willy’s brother Ben. Willy wishes that he had gone to Alaska with his brother Ben. At the same time he speaks of Ben’s having walked into a jungle and when Ben came out he was rich. Happy tells his dad that he is going to retire him for life. Ben becomes Willy’s ideal. Ben is a man who has nothing in the beginning but he ends up in riches. The Jungle than Ben walks into is symbolically the jungle of life. But the jungle becomes the woods for Willy. Thus when Willy says that ‘the woods are burning’ he means that life is closing in on him. Ben conquered the jungle of life, Willy was trapped by the burning wood. Consequently the phrase ‘the woods are burning’ suggest that time is running out on Willy. He no longer has enough time to do anything. This concept of time is again emphasized by Ben. Every time we see Ben, he has his watch out and keeps saying that he has only a few minutes or that he has to catch a train. He is always on the move while Willy remains still.…

The speaker’s use of “sometime” in the opening stanza allows him to detach himself from the collision and also highlights that he has no stake over the outcome of the crash. The speaker sketches a tranquil atmospheric scene through terms such as “moose”, “highway” and “forest”. The terms also highlight that the event could of happened in any location that has a “moose”, “Highway” or “forest”; this is purposely done to make the audience think about the chances of such an event happening, which brings forward the theme of supreme intelligence or a controller of fate. Lux characterizes the moose as an unassuming animal, however he personifies it as thinking for itself in the quote “decides the day, for him is done.” This develops the idea of supreme intelligence; if the moose decides the day is over, then it must have a minor thought process, which means that, it could believe in a supreme…
