The author uses imagery when he gives many descriptive details about what is happening which allows the reader to create their own image of the story. For instance, when he states “My poor friend found it impossible to reply for many minutes” he does not literally mean it. In this case Montresor wants revenge for the “thousand injuries” Fortunato caused him by acting as if they were great friends. He wants to make Fortunato feel this way only to make it easier for himself to finish what he set himself to do. Another example of irony would be when Montresor states “ My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to-day.” Montresor, from the moment he begins speaking to him, acts polite so Fortunato does not suspect anything. It creates that suspense that makes the reader think of what Montresor will do for revenge. In other words Montresor is being a hypocrite to be able to achieve what he wants to do.
