What Is Social Darwinism?
Social Darwinism was a main force in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first to coin the phrase “survival of the fittest,” Herbert Spencer, a 19th century philosopher who we can credit with the establishment of the concept of Social Darwinism. Spencer applied the theory of evolution to human conduct. Social Darwinist based their belief on theories of evolution developed by Charles Darwin. Some social Darwinist felt that the government should not regulate or get involved with human competition by trying to control the economy. Instead, decided to advocate a laissiez-faire economic and political system which favored in competition and self-interest in social and business affairs.
