Sir Edward Elgar’s Inspiration Elgar was born on June 2nd, 1857 in the United Kingdom. Around this time English music was in the Romantic Era, which meant that all the music made during this time was generally very emotionally demanding. Sir Edward Elgar did not go to school to learn about music, rather his father, William Henry Elgar, owned a music store. The only formal music education he received was a few violin lessons. Along with running a music store, Edward’s father played the organ, conducted the choir for St. George’s Catholic Church, and was a local violinist. Edward apprenticed as a church organist, choirmaster, and a director of orchestras.
