As civilization grows savagery grows with it, it is harmful to society. The more rules society has, the more rules there are to break. In Lord of the Flies, once Ralph started establishing rules, people began to break them more and more until the rules had no effect. All it takes is one selfish person to break a rule, and will cause a domino effect on how others view themselves in society and as a person. One person being selfish will almost force others to be selfish as well causing more problems and eventually more than anyone can handle. “We are all ready to be savage in some cause. The difference between a good man and a bad one is the choice of the cause.” (William James). Everyone is born with savagery and it is always around. In Lord of the Flies, the kids went from just setting up camp and surviving together, to splitting up completely and trying to kill each other. The kids are all probably nice kids, but once they become selfish, they become savage. “Problem solving is hunting. It is savage pleasure and we are born to it.” (Thomas Harris). This quote means that all people have savagery in them in some form, if it comes out of them the only way to temporarily stop it is by “hunting”. Although the more we “hunt” the more savage they become in the long run and others will have to be savage as well. “Kill him! Kill him!” (Golding 114). This represents how the young boys turned themselves in complete savages. Instead of helping each other survive, they turned against each other and are killing each other. William Golding showed how savagery controlled people into turning against
