What Is Nosferatu A Monster
The film Nosferatu is a typical German movie from the early 1920's that loosely based on the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. Simply to avoid the piracy the name of the main character was changed but the plot remained the same as the original. However the changed were not made enough and the movie faced with the lawsuit caused all copies to be destroyed. Gradually in 1960s one print of Nosferatu was found in the U.S. and from that onward other films of Nosferatu was created from that one print. Unlike Dracula that is handsome and charming, Nosferatu is more of an obvious hideous monster type. It later becomes famous horror classic film.

However, Bram Stoker was not merely out to give his Victorian audience a thrill ride.     Nosferatu was the first adaptation in 1922, followed by Hammer’s Dracula Collection (1958-1974) featuring Christopher Lee, Dracula Lord of the Dammed (2011), Dracula Reborn (2012), Dracula (2013) and many more. All of these adaptations have had varying amounts of success, but so many have been made so it begs the question did we really need another to add to this long list? Throughout the years Dracula’s character has been revised so many times, transforming dependent on Hollywood’s needs at the time. Original representations of Dracula are one dimensional and the silent figures are given no human qualities. Christopher Lee who was famously given very little lines for his portrayal said in an interview with Total Film, “all they do is write a story and try and fit the character in somewhere, which is very clear when you see the films. They gave me nothing to do! I pleaded with Hammer to let me use some of the lines that Bram Stoker had written. Occasionally, I sneaked one in.” More recent adaptations tend to have a more contemporary take on the character. In a more advanced society we aspire to have more open minds and therefore it is natural for a modern audience to want to understand why Dracula does the things he does. What makes this recent adaptation stand out from the others is its setting. In Dracula Reborn (2012) the whole film is set in the present day and it has not been much of a success because it completely loses the character of the narrative. Meanwhile, Dracula Untold is set in 15th Century Transylvania and therefore emulates the success of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones because we are transported into an equally mysterious world from a different time period. It suffices our need for historical knowledge and the pleasure we get from taking a look at how people lived in another time.     In Bram Stoker's novel, Dracula is depicted as the definition of evil. Throughout the novel, there is no doubt about his nefarious intentions and murderous pastimes as he proclaims, “My revenge has just begun! I spread it over centuries and time is on my side “ (Brams 339, ch 22). Thus it is apparent in the novel that Dracula is evil. Brams made his definition of evil quite clear through Dracula’s sexualized, violent, and sacrilegious actions. Evil was elucidated as an overtly sexually driven being, who is fueled by violence, and does not follow God. To Stoker, this was a definite ideal of evil befitting of his time, so then, why are will still obsessed with Dracula today, why has this tale in particular persevered? Again, the clear declaration of Dracula as an antagonistic murderer still fulfills humanity's desire for a definitive ideal of good and evil, over time that ideal has not faded into the background. We as human beings have gravitated towards such a clear-cut definition of evil, and rarely have we come across one so obvious as Dracula’s tale. We yearn for a separate ideal of good like that of Jonathan Harker to defeat the looming threat of evil of Dracula.
