What Is Deviant Behavior
Deviant Behavior

Though my background is of the Filipino culture, I was raised here in America throughout my childhood. There was one topic of discussion that started many arguments between my parents and I. That topic was my decision on what I wanted to be when I grow up. Filipino culture always wants their children to become better than their parents, which meant becoming something like a doctor or lawyer, etc. I am sure they are great careers but I chose a whole different path. I have always had an entrepreneurial mindset as a young kid and starting my business is what I felt passionate about. Today, I have an online business, though I won’t go into details, I love it. The problem is that my parents still wanted me to go to school. I

In “Outsiders Defining Deviance” The author Becker talk about how when someone does not follow the rules they become an outsider and are deviant. People are see this way because our society set it up that if you don't do what everyone is doing or what your are supposed to do you are the odd ball out. This is just how when someone has the choice to go to college and doesn't take it they are looked down upon because they don't meet the society's requirements of education. And then that one choice can change someone's whole life because just for not going to college some jobs won't even look at that person for the job. And this type of thing is what's wrong about society because it's set up so that if you don't follow the rules that it has then…

I have always strived for excellence in my academics. I would be disappointed in myself if my grade was not an A. This has led to unwarranted stress and illnesses. I now know that I was taking on too much. I came to the realization that I could not get an A in every class. Being a single parent comes with challenges on its own. Adding a job, all responsibilities of the home, child’s education and illnesses only made matters worse. I have made a vow to ask for help when I need it. My pride has gotten in the way in the past. I have to put pride in the background, if only for a few months while on this journey towards success. A long term personal goal that I have is to get married and own a house. My parents have been married for fifty two years and I always look up to them. I dream of having what they worked so hard to maintain. Getting married would mean I would have someone to share the household responsibilities with. It would also mean I would have someone to go explore the world with. I would love to travel the world, go on cruises and enjoy the different sceneries that nature has to offer. I presently reside in a condo and my space is very limited. I would love to own a house with lots of space. I love decorating and gardening, this is very limited or nonexistent in my present…

Although my father does not want to admit that even though he has finished college, he still does not have a job that supports him fully. Yet, he always instilled in me the importance of education. Now that I have grown up, and my father and basically every other adult in my life has told me that going to college was the only option, I’ve found myself wanting to explore my options more. For example, I’ve thought about going to the Air Force, Navy, Army, etc. Also, I have thought about starting my own business.…

Deviance, social sanctions, and the control theory are other sociological concepts observed in the film. Deviance depicts an action that disobeys social norms. Every character in the film is seen as deviant by either their actions that forced them into detention, or executed actions during the detention. For example, Claire is deviant because she skips class so she can go shopping, and during detention, she instigates a relationship with John. Allison appears in detention because she was bored on a Saturday, and during detention, she steals Brian’s wallet. Andrew is deviant when he smokes since he is a varsity-lettered wrestler. John is incessantly deviant because he challenges and argues with Principal Vernon, does not partake in school clubs…

The second example from the podcast of being deviant is when David Romer was saying don’t punt and you’ll have a better chance at winning the game. On average you can win two extra games a year when you don’t punt during a football game. This is a threshold because it’s a small group of people that know each other and punting has always been the way to do it. The only way one person would change this is if a radical person would step up and go first, then after that other coaches would try it. This is an example of being deviant because punting on the fourth down is what a coach would usually do, but in this case if you don’t punt at all during a game it’s against the norm for society. If you didn’t punt people would see it as doing the wrong…

I received my recent grade for Topic 3 assignment “Deviance and Its Consequenses”. It is obvious that I am worried because of such a low grade and I can see that it is my fault as the essay has some slappy mistakes. I put my effort to find an interesting topic for disqussion and provided the facts in my essay; I took interviews to be more familiar with peoples’ opinions. Through my research and I stated it in the essay I found out that all of social classes whitnessing these deviant behavior, described in my essay and with the examples: “Nail polish” and “Subway” I was trying to show their reaction. I carefully read the questions, used GCU library to find article and these is what I came up with. I can clearly see that it is weak student work…

This is a decision that I regret to this day. My grandmother did not raise me to be to a “quitter” and I disappointed not only my family who was so proud and happy for me to get out of the neighborhood but also disappointed myself. I feel that by going back to school will increase my financial situation in two ways. The first way is by having a degree in business I can obtain various positions in the workforce that require my expertise, rather than be confined to just one particular job. By obtaining my degree I feel that it will place me in a situation to have a career rather than just a job.…

Second, racial minorities are often perceived as being deviant, this perception forces the creation of subcultures and upholds white supremacy. To understand deviance’s relationship to race it is important to observe the common attempts to subordinate, deviantize, and verminize people. Goode describes slavery, as “one-sided power relations” because white people exploited black people. Unequal power structures are a byproduct of inter-ethnic conflict. Because of limited resources, members of the less powerful category create micro-niches or subcultures wherein they can reclaim power and control of their own destiny. An example of a micro-niche or subculture, would be the establishment of historically black colleges which served African American…

    LIfe Goals

I left college for a year to come back home and work. At the time that I left school I didn’t think that it was for me. I was working my butt off at school every day with no reward. At times I felt as if it was all for nothing. I didn’t have a job, I needed money and I stayed stressed out and bogged down with all different types of coursework. I just felt that my talents and effort could be put to better use elsewhere. I felt that if I dropped out and became employed full time that that situation would better suit me. However, after having had taken the working man’s route and still barely making ends meet I feel like I made an irrational decision by leaving college. I also found out that a college graduate has the potential to make up to a million more dollars in their lifetime as opposed to those with only a high school diploma. That tiny bit of information was enough to change my mind and lead me towards wanting to get back into school. I made a hasty decision in leaving school in the first place. I was more concerned about my current living situation instead of being focused on long term goals and how successful I wanted to be later on in life. I guess I can say that I had a little growing up to do. Now I can confidently say that I’m more focused than I’ve ever been in my entire life and that nothing will hinder me from becoming successful.…

Deviance according to the textbook is a violation of contextual, cultural, and social norms I usually look don’t approve or partake in deviant acts, but this week I did do something that technically would count as a deviant act. Last Sunday was my friend's birthday, and we decided to have lunch at a buffet with other friends. All of my friends who came gave her a gift, but I did not. I usually bring gifts or offerings to people if they have a birthday party or some other special occasion, but for this one I just forgot. One of my best friends asked me if I got her a gift, I said no and he looked at me and nodded his head in disapproval. Presents were optional, but the fact that everyone else besides me gave a present made me feel bad. What made me more guilty was that her parents paid for my meal.…

An interesting assignment was assigned to us this week, one that I was excited and a little nervous to get started on. Our society is quite dependent on what is “normal.” Normal is following a routine, one that was set only by you and no others. Normal is to dress in what is considered socially acceptable, not garb that would throw you into a social outcast setting. But what happens when you defy these norms and start to step out of the box?…

For this week’s class I found an article on a case of school crime, the article was published by the inquisitor. The crime in question however is unusual in comparison to the regular school environment crime, in today’s world we mostly hear of school shootings, teacher and student’s sexual relationship, theft and more. This case stems from two teens who were arrested for spiking their teacher’s tea with hand sanitizer.…

First of all, my question to all who agree that children should choose their career, are you more experienced than your parents? We choose our career when we are about 17 years old. So do you think that you have explored more life than your parents? They come across hurdles and are now successful so they know how people are and have the recipe to be successful.
