What is Democracy?
To me Democracy is the regular and consistent consultation of a peoples in order to reach a decision. Democracy truly is a government of the people , by the people and for the people. It is an inclusive platform in which an entire nation, every citizen down to the most proletarian becomes a contributing member of the government of their country. Democracy symbolizes the voice, the ability to express one’s self, to make one’s self heard without fear of persecution or reproach, but above all Democracy is a privilege. A privilege afforded to a nation through a system of checks and balances. A system through which a government self-polices, maintaining a balance of power throughout the three branches that make up a Democracy. In it’s purest form Democracy consults the people and all of the people, allowing each and every citizen an equal voice in the future of their nation, for every vote one makes has a direct impact on the life of that individual, everything in Democracy is dependent on decisions made by the individual working for the people; from distribution of resources to how far one feels protected by their government, Democracy allows every individual a say in their country. However this rendition of Democracy (Direct) has very limited feasibility. In order for a large population to employ Democracy as their government of choice it is necessary for the institution of subsidiary levels of elected representative government; each strata charged with different responsibilities, the exertion of the power however should ideally fall on the lowest level, maintaining the horizontal focus of Democracy. This elected representation however instantly alienates the minority of the population, necessitating the existence of basic and unalienable rights among the all citizens of a nation, limiting what can be done to every individual and affording them basic human rights and freedoms that no peer can deny.
