What Is Beauty?
John Carter 2/20/12

What is Beauty?
Well like some say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, beauty can hardly mean the same to all people because we are different and our standards and tastes differ as well. “We all think that someone or something is beautiful when it provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, placidity and satisfaction”. People usually judge the physical or inner beauty of others. A celebrity is always judged by his or her physical appearance. Paparazzi’s are always ready and looking out for outer beauty in a celebrity’s appearance, either by the way they look or dress. But outer beauty isn’t the only beautiful thing a person may have. An individual not necessarily a celebrity can not only be beautiful on the outside but in the inside as well. That is called inner beauty. Inner beauty is confidence, it is kindness, and it is tender loving caring. What makes up a person beautiful is by the way they are with others, always lending a hand, letting others know they can always count on that person. It’s all about the individual’s soul. It is someone who is so loyal and honest; who you can have a great time with always laughing, never having a dull moment; always giving advice or cheering up an upset person. It is someone you would love to be around with all the time that when she or he is gone you start missing that person. This is True beauty. True beauty is what makes a couple’s relationship last because true beauty means true love. “Beauty isn’t cruel; beauty isn’t covered up with make-up it is always there, it is naturally beautiful. Beauty has no flaws”. Beauty is simply beautiful. Beauty is all around us. Beauty can be the natural view of a sunny day on the beach during summer days or walking down the shore with your true love watching the sunsets view. Beauty is naturally pure and joyful and true. Beauty is either glamorous or perhaps simply. It is a painting, a car, a house, jewelry; it is what only yours eyes see in

This generation believes that beauty is based on how you look, and how you dress. Beauty is more than that, it comes from the inside. Beauty is a combination of physical, social, and mental aspects. It can be one of the most complex aspects of life. Many people argue about appearance and the physical aspects that make up beauty, but in reality there is no true definition of beauty, because beauty is different for everyone. To help support this claim, I will be citing from authors Rosen, Koggel, Montez, and Hickerson.…

    A Woman's Beauty

In reading Susan Sontag's "A Woman's Beauty", she explains that women think they have an obligation to be beautiful and that they consider how they look more important than who they are. Sontag also adds that women are sometimes obsessed with their outer beauty that they lose sight of their inner beauty. Fashion and the Media both have taken outer beauty way too far for women. In this society today, women are more pressured by other women on how they look. Women judge other women about their looks but men don't do the same, because it is considered" unmanly" as Sontag states. Women naturally try to be appropriate and beautiful to attract men. Unfortunately, they have gone to very high levels of obsession with themselves that they lost track of their purpose of being beautiful and their position in this society. Sontag also argues that women at the same time have the idea in their minds that being beautiful will earn them a certain reputation and place in society, and that beauty brings power and success. Even young women grow up have these same ideas in their minds and according to Sontag, "they are taught to see their bodies in parts and to evaluate each part separately". In modern days beauty is administered as a form of self-oppression. In the process of growing up, young women may forget how intelligent they are and their goals in life. According to some people who have been surveyed about women's success in the society, good looks are a great advantage in many areas of life. Let's go back to the point that women try to make themselves beautiful to attract the best men possible. Women forget that beauty is also the power to attract. In women's view, men come in whole packages together with being handsome and successful. On the other hand, men just want just want healthy and decent women with good personality. Susag Sontag's essay is indeed very accurate in revealing some important facts about women's beauty and the way the society looks at…

As the very popular saying goes, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!" Many people have different views on what they consider to be beautiful which is why many people that I would view as unattractive are very beautiful in someone else's eyes. The world today defines beauty based on outward appearances alone. You are not beautiful if you are not physically attractive. According to the world's standards, beauty means being thin and tall. A clear complexion, shiny hair, straight teeth, radiant skin, and correct proportions are all elements of beauty. Unfortunately, numerous people cannot be all of these things and they are forced to believe that they are not beautiful in the eyes of others. Another saying that is very popular is, "Beauty is only skin deep." I do not believe that this statement is true for the reason that with all the cosmetic surgery, technology and make-up that we have in the world today beauty is bought and not natural. Beauty can also be determined by a person's personality and not necessarily by their looks because the way a person presents him or herself can make all the difference in the world. The most unattractive person can also display beautiful characteristics and it will conceal their appearance. Is beauty only conveyed in one particular color? No, African Americans are produced in many different shades, vanilla, caramel, mocha, coffee and chocolate. Black is in fact beautiful and there is no other race that can measure up to the beauty that is displayed by African Americans. In my opinion, people should not focus solely on the outside appearance because that can damage ones self-esteem. Parents should raise their children to appreciate the thoughts and actions of a person opposed to the looks of a person. Our priorities in American today are not at all in order but maybe one-day society will learn that beauty is not…

The definition of beauty has changed over the centuries, and over time become more obscure. In the past beauty was defined by the tone of ones skin or by the size of a persons waist, but it has yet to be defined by the character of a person. Men and women alike are held up to these impossible standards that were set by society way before their time, and enforced throughout their adolescence. For example when looking at the poem “Barbie Doll” you can see how society was looking from the outside in and judging the young woman by her appearance, but what the spectators failed to see is that overtime the woman had lost who she was as an individual; she lost the things that made her unique.…

“Studies serve for delight, for ornament and for ability.” Their main use lies in the fact that we can use them for seclusion and relaxation. We can use them in conversations and as a means of embellishing one’s language. We can use studies to make the unable more able, grant wit to those in need of it and to cure any other deficits. Studies are both a delight to the mind as to eloquence. This idea is so compelling, because it suggests that the human mind, born into this world, needs interaction to make it function the way it is supposed to function. Countless scholars have come before us and have walked on the shoulders of giants to get where we are now.…

Beauty is not a quality that is easily defined. People have their own definitions of beauty by what they perceive. Although beauty is often referred to in its physical form, and appeals to multiple senses, for some it comes from within the mind instead of the external reality. Physical beauty and inner beauty have similarities as well as many differences.…

What is beauty and sexuality to you? How do we define beauty and sexuality? People in the world have different perspectives of defining beauty due to their culture, religion, or even the people around them. In the “Allegory of the Cave” by Plato, there are prisoners that are chained up in a cave with a fire behind them so that they can only face the wall and see the shadows of objects passing by the cave. They have never seen the world outside of the cave. One prisoner is then unchained and freed to the outside world. He then sees the different world and goes back to the cave, trying to describe the spectacular things that he saw to his fellow prisoners. However, the other prisoners do not believe him because they can only see shadows. Throughout the essay, I will discuss the symbolisms of beauty in the allegory and describe another theory related to the true beauty.…

When you look at a bruised apple, your brain automatically thinks EW. We don’t want to eat the apple because of the outside, because of its physical properties. Society shows us pictures of shiny green apples in magazines, catalogues and cook books. So when we go into the kitchen and see that bruised apple why wouldn’t we think negatively about it? The truth is on the inside the apple tastes as good as any other apple. Society creates the same effect with girls. They show skinny, flawless girls who all are either photo shopped, or have had surgery to make them flawless. Society has formed a negative body image on girls everywhere. People automatically pick the skinny girl first, over that heavy girl. This is completely wrong, because of society; we have girls, who are healthy and beautiful thinking they are ugly. The truth is every girl is beautiful on the inside, and that is all that matters.…

In the rush of a morning workday, do they lose themselves to keep up with the speed of others ' pace? What are they thinking about while walking in the street? Do they have a heart of finding the beauty around them? Do they care about the things happening around them? It is these questions that would be examined by an experiment organized by the Washington in the street. A brilliant classical musician in the world, called Joshua Bell, dressed up into a street musician and performed a couple of music with his violin outside the exit of subway station. During the performance, nearly one thousand people passed by. However, almost all of them don 't seem to care about what happened and just walked with a mind thinking about other things. Among these people, some of them were interviewed. Surprisingly, a majority of them did not pay attention to the musician and so did music. Some people gave a couple of bucks and went away. Very little of them can completely appreciate the music performed by Bell. In all, beauty is just around them and they just lose the eye of finding it.…

Have you ever had an assignment and wondered if you should work with a group or work alone. In my opinion, working in a group is more important than working alone. There are advantages and disadvantaged to working in a group, but I rather work in a group because you can divide the work among several people and get work done faster , you can come up with more ideas and solutions, and you can interact with people and have less stress doing the project.…
