ACHI CULTURE In less than an hour, driving southwest from Guatemala City, you can reach the famous and fabled town of La Antigua Guatemala. The Maya were organized in city-states who shared the same beliefs and deferred to priests who derived power from their knowledge of astronomy, mathematics and numerology. The Maya were very much aware of the passage of time. They recorded some dates on stelae and probably much more in books. Only few of the books are available today, that too in the form of translations in Spanish. Hence we have to rely on whatever clues we can find in what is left of archaeological sites that the Spanish did not plunder or

Between 1980 into the mid 1980s… the genocide of the Maya occurred within the city of modern Guatemala (p.355). It was during this time that the Mayan society were forced to leave their home in the altiplano (the highlands—due to an earthquake) and had to begin to assimilate with the rest of the Guatemala population. During this time, the Fuerzas Armadas Rebeldes (FAR) ladino organization extended their communist influence to those Mayas assosciated with the highlands. Therefore because of their emphasis upon the FAR and towards enabling their own highland culture within city of Guatemala that initially caused the Guatemalan city, under the leadership of General Benedicto Lucas, to initiate a war that would deprive the communist forces of their…

The information in the book Popol-Vuh reveals that the Guatemalan tribes lived a long time ago in regions of lagoons, but probably because they did not have enough space for their activities and necessary independence, left this land and peregrinated toward the territories of the interior Guatemala. They followed the course of great rivers that have their origin in the mountains of Guatemala. This way they arrived at high plateaus and mountains from the interior and they settle down and started to take advantage of the resources this land offered to them.…

Guatemala's culture is a unique product of Native American ways and a strong Spanish colonial heritage. About half of Guatemala's population is mestizo (known in Guatemala as ladino), people of mixed European and indigenous ancestry. Ladino culture is dominant in urban areas, and is heavily influenced by European and North American trends. Unlike many Latin American countries, Guatemala still has a large indigenous population, the Maya, which has retained a distinct identity. Deeply rooted in the rural highlands of Guatemala, many indigenous people speak a Mayan language, follow traditional religious and village customs, and continue a rich tradition in textiles and other crafts. The two cultures have made Guatemala a complex society that is deeply divided between rich and poor. This division has produced much of the tension and violence that have marked Guatemala's history (Guatemalan Culture and History).…

The ancient Mayans were located in central Mexico basin on the Yucatan Peninsula and had achievements in architecture, math, astrology, and writing. The Mayans had the tallest structure, a pyramid temple in Tikal, until the twentieth century (Document 1). This shows the ancient Mayans had knowledge about geometry, math, and construction. This is a sign of architecture achievement especially because the Mayans didn’t have the technology to move the big rocks and stones around. This structure proved to be long-lasting and shows the Mayans were far more advanced than what we previously imagined. As long with their advances in architecture the Mayans developed a complex calendar with glyphs (Document 2). These glyphs were based on their advanced writing system. Mayan writing consisted of 800 hieroglyphic symbols and they used their writing system to record important historical events. Glyphs are found on religious temples, stairs, walls of homes, and stairs. In addition, the Mayans were very much interested in astronomy. In fact, they observed the moon, sun, and the stars and then created a calendar!…
