tÜ~í=Å~ìëÉÇ=íÜÉ=hçêÉ~å= t~ê\ After World War II, Koreans rejoiced at the defeat of the Japanese, but their joy was short-lived. As the Cold War began to develop in Europe, the USA and USSR were unable to reach an agreement on the unification of Korea - they could not agree on what form the government should take, the type of economy it should have, on the alliances it should make.
Liberation from the war did not result in immediate freedom and instead, the country was divided by ideological differences caused by the emerging Cold War.
World War II divided Korea into a Communist, northern half and an Americanoccupied southern half, divided at the 38th parallel.
As a result, Koreans were unable to establish an independent government.
In November 1947, United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that called for general elections under the supervision of a UN Commission. However, the
Soviet Union refused to comply with the resolution and denied the UN Commission access to the northern half of Korea. UN General Assembly then adopted another resolution calling for elections in areas accessible to the UN Commission.
The first elections in Korea were carried out on May 10, 1948, in the area south of the 38th parallel. The parallel came to divide the Korean Peninsula in to South and
North. Syngman Rhee was elected the first President of the Republic of Korea in 1948.
Meanwhile, north of the 38th parallel, a Communist regime was set up under the leadership of Kim Il- sung.
At this time, both regimes were extremely authoritarian and both leaders (both of whom intended

After spending time in prison Rhee moved to the states where he earned a PHD from Princeton, he then returned to Korea in 1910, the year it was annexed by Japan to continue his activist work. In his life he organized various protests against the corruption and influence of the Japanese and Russians. His fight proved successful and with South Korea officially becoming independent in 1948. Generally summarizing the Korean War as in Blair’s Forgotten War – At the end of World War II the western half of the world (the Capitalist side) and the eastern half of the world (the Communist side) divided the Korean peninsula into two nations, the northern half communist and the southern half American occupied and capitalist. The two nations were divided at the 38th parallel. The Korean War itself began when the communist North Koreans invaded their South Korean neighbors by advancing over the 38th parallel boundary, on the 28th of June 1951 when the North Korean army, using Russian equipment and advisors, had conquered much of South Korea, a poorly equipped and poorly led U.S. Army came to the rescue of the South Koreans. President Truman had basically stripped the U.S. Army’s equipment and manpower down to nothing for budget reasons, believing that his military advisors spoiled, dumb, and “big spenders”, (sparing no expense to win a battle). Truman believed that he could do better than any military official. General Douglas MacArthur, on whom Blair spares no criticism, had been overseeing the occupation of Japan, and was a decorated general during WWII in the Pacific theater, he was the obvious choice to be appointed commander of the U.S. forces which were to hold back the North Korean army at Pusan – the tip of the Korean peninsula. MacArthur was in command of…

North Korea is a country that is ruled by a dictator and has a communist government. A communist government rules all the land and gives the same amount of money and supplies to all the people in the country. “Daily Necessities were obtained from the Public Distribution System (PDS)” (95,Hassig). The PDS shut down in 1995 because foreign aid was cut off expect for Pyongyang, the capital city. In rural areas, a lot of the children were born as “no-count” meaning that when they were born they weren’t counted as part of the existing society and didn’t have supplies given to them. North Korea was once a unified country with South Korea until September 9, 1948 when it became a separate country. From 1910 to 1945 Japan had ruled all of Korea. “After World War II from 1939 to 1945 Russia controlled what is right now North Korea, and the United States controlled southern Korea. Three years after the war North and South Korea became independent countries.” (6, Haberle) The existing Cold War, the war between Russia and the United States, helped start the Korean War on June 25, 1950 when North Korea attacked South Korea. At the time Japan had control of all of Korea, then the U.S. had South Korea and Russia had the North. This war went on for three years and afterwards, the Demilitarized Zone better known as the DMZ separated South and North Korea. North and South Korea became independent countries with very few allies.…
