What Caused The Battle Of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam was the first major battle of the civil war that took place on Northern soil; the Battle of Antietam is recognized as the bloodiest single day battle throughout the duration of the Civil War. The battle took place on September 17, 1864 in close proximity to the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland. General Robert E. Lee led 45,000 Confederate soldiers, attempting to invade the North, however, Lee’s brigade was intercepted by 70,000 Union troops operating under General George McClellan. After under a day of fighting, the Confederate soldiers were forced to retreat, causing the battle to be labeled a Union victory.
