What Are The Arguments Against Standardized Testing
Standardized testing is suppose to help students thrive and succeed. It is placed in American school systems to prepare the students for life or a higher education. One can infer that standardized testing shows accurately good measures growth of student performance and can target areas of weakness and development. In contrast, standardized testing cannot measure attributes, or student worth. It defines the students on how they test or their achievements in academics. A test cannot determine a student's self worth; a test can't show...Therefore, standardized testing should not be apart of the American school system. Experience and research has shown that standardized testing can measure students skill and understanding because they are comprehensive when it comes down to testing. A student's performance is crucial for a higher level education. Colleges and graduate programs require students to have basic learning skills to succeed. Standardized testing helps with knowledge and understanding but it doesn’t teach the basic attributes that everyone should know and have. Creativity, self-discipline, and empathy, these basic attributes are …show more content…
Testing does not show how a student actually thinks, it shows how well the student can test. Tests are suppose to make students take a minute and really think, as in critical thinking. However, most standard tests in America are multiple choice. These multiple choice tests do not actually let the test taker think or evaluate the question or problem. Standardized testing also defines students. By receiving a low test score it put the student in a “I am dumb” stance. Students are being define by how high of a score they receive on a test. Students with high test scores are seen as studious or smart, but the students receiving low score are seen as not ready or unprepared for life. Life is not about tests. One does not go through life taking tests to make everyday

    Do you hate staring at a computer/ piece of paper for more than two hours and answering questions? I am sure most people would answer “no”, and that is why standardized testing puts more harm than good in today’s world. Standardized testing causes a lot more problems than usual. It used to be a part of life, but now it’s causing kids not to go to college, and it’s causing kids to have a level of stress that shouldn’t even be allowed. People all over are stating that they give a false overview of who the student actually is, and in the end, these tests won’t get you anywhere in life. It’s important to many people including students who are taking the tests, teachers who are preparing the students for these tests, and of course the parents who have to deal with all the complaints from their child about these tests. This is a pretty important issue today, because so much is riding on these tests. If you do poorly you won’t get accepted to the university you want, or your teacher could get fired because of your performance. Although some people think standardized testing is just a part of life and it teaches students that it’s not okay to fail, these tests give a false interpretation of who the student actually is. One score does not tell you if that person is an outstanding individual or not. These scores might help you get into a better university, but when it comes to a career later on down the road, employers don’t look at what you got on your SAT, they look to see if you are best fit for the job, and whether you are a hard worker and would bring the company many positives, and I think colleges should focus on that same idea.…

    These test only show the students’ performance the day of the test and not the overall growth of the student over the year. The standardized test does a disservice to both the teacher who worked hard to help their students grow and the student who worked extremely hard over the course of the year and improved tremendously, but failed to pass the test.     Overall, standardized test are unable to correctly measure the growth in a student. According to Greenhaven Press, “Contrary to popular assumptions about standardized testing, the tests do a poor job of measuring student achievement. They fail to measure such important attributes as creativity and critical thinking skills. Studies indicate that standardized tests reward superficial thinking and may discourage more analytical thinking. Additionally, because of the small sample of knowledge that is tested, standardized tests provide a very incomplete picture of student achievement.” The quote from above shows how students are graded based on a rubric and their creativity and critical thinking skills are not accounted for. According to Lynn Olson, “between 50-80% of student growth was temporary and shortly after they lost the gained knowledge and that there were no long term benefits.” (Study Questions Reliability of Single-Year Test-Score Gains). This study shows how students are taught skills so that they can do well on the test.
