In April 1975, Dahl was in a bar (which is now Beauregard Vineyards Tasting room in Bonny Doon) listening to his friends complain about their pets. This gave him the idea for the perfect "pet": a rock.[1] A rock would not need to be fed, walked, bathed, groomed and would not die, become sick, or be disobedient. He said they were to be the perfect pets, and joked about it with his friends.[2] However, he eventually took the idea seriously, and drafted an "instruction manual" for a pet rock. It was full of puns, gags and plays on words that referred to the rock as an actual pet. The original had no eyes.

The first Pet Rocks were ordinary gray stones bought at a builder's supply store. They were marketed like live pets, in custom cardboard boxes, com;plete with straw and breathing holes for the "animal."[1] The fad lasted about six months, ending after a short increase in sales during the Christmas season of December 1975. Although by February 1976 they were discounted due to lower sales, Dahl sold 1.5 million Pet Rocks and became a millionaire.[3][4][5]
A thirty-two page official training manual titled The Care and Training of Your Pet Rock was included, with instructions on how to properly raise and care for one's new Pet Rock (notably lacking instructions for feeding, bathing, etc.). The instruction manual was the real product: it was full of gags, puns and jokes. It contained several commands that could be taught to the new pet. While "sit" and "stay" were effortless to accomplish, "roll over" usually required a little extra help from the trainer/owner. "come," "stand" and "shake hands" were found to be near-impossible to teach, but "attack" was fairly simple (also with some additional help from the

The only part of the stone in contact with the ice is the running surface, a narrow, flat annulus or ring, 0.25 to 0.50 inches wide and about 5 inches in diameter; the sides of the stone bulge convex down to the ring and the inside of the ring is hollowed concave to clear the ice and slide very smoothly on the surface. This concave bottom was first proposed by J. S. Russell of Toronto, Ontario, Canada sometime after 1870, and was subsequently adopted by Scottish stone manufacturer Andrew Kay who now produced more than a million rocks.…

The year was 1967. It was the year that the world was introduced to a magazine known as the Rolling Stone. The Rolling Stone was given birth by Jann Wenner, a 21-year-old music lover from San Francisco, California. The magazine was named after a band, a song and the idea that change and movement could keep people young. The magazine was created on a borrowed $7,500 to address the interests of a younger generation that viewed rock and roll as more than just music, but as a lifestyle. The Rolling Stone is successful in understanding and exploiting the views of the most devout followers of rock and roll and has grown to become a Fifth Avenue enterprise worth over $250 million dollars.…

Jeff Koons is famous for taking kitschy ideas such as balloon animals which makes him extremely controversial because viewers either love or hate him. He is known for turning his ideas into giant works of art and also for making millions of dollars when selling these pieces. The “Balloon Dog” sculpture of a balloon puppy is not made of the typical balloon; instead it is made out a chrome metal painted a reddish pink. The mirrorized finish only adds to the piece because not only do you see a ten foot tall dog, you see yourself (the consumer) in the reflection. The sculpture was made in different colors and placed in different locations such as an exhibition in the Chateau de Versailles.…

A stone tool is, in the most general sense, any tool made either partially or entirely out of stone. Although stone tool-dependent societies and cultures still exist today, most stone tools are associated with prehistoric, particularly Stone Age cultures that have become extinct. Archaeologists often study such prehistoric societies, and refer to the study of stone tools as lithic analysis. Stone has been used to make a wide variety of different tools throughout history, including arrow heads, spearpoints and querns. Stone tools may be made of either ground stone or chipped stone, and a person who creates tools out of the latter is known as a flintknapper.…

Pyrite is a very interesting mineral for many reasons. The name Pyrite comes from the Greek word “pyr” which means “fire,” and was named because it was found that sparks would fly from it if struck against another minerals like steel. In early times, this sparking ability gave people a way of creating fire, and in later times, this ability made it popular for use in early firearms devices like the wheel lock. Today Pyrite is called “Fools Gold” because throughout history people have mistaken it for Gold because of its similar visible structure, metallic surface and brassy yellow color. The funny thing is Gold is often found with to Pyrite deposits. Pyrite can easily be distinguished from Gold. Pyrite is much lighter in color and much harder. Even though Pyrite is a fairly hard mineral, its crystals are known to break and crumble, because it is brittle.…

    Rock And Roll History

Rock first surfaced as its own genre in 1953; a time of racial segregation in the United States. It was thought of by White people as an "evil music" due its blend of African American and White2 cultures. However, that did not stop it from becoming too biggest thing since nuclear energy (which was the biggest thing since sliced bread). The first huge concert in Rock's history was "The Moondog Coronation" put on by Alan "Moondog" Freed, a DJ from Cleveland, which nearly sparked a riot, due to thousands of fans trying to get into the sold out show. In the next few years, the Rock movement took a large swing toward White youth when "Bill Haley & His Comets" played one of the biggest hits ever, "Rock Around the Clock". At the same time, Elvis Presley was gaining popularity playing "Rockabilly", a blend of Rock and Country music that became very popular in the south. He became the world's first music superstar. In 1957, Rock became a worldwide power when Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis toured Australia. Due to immense history, of which I could write a whole paper on, I will only go this far in rock's…

"Rock was formed out of the social, economic and political context of post-war America". The social context was on the bases of the post war baby boom, which counted for the birth of 77 million babies between the years 1946-1964. By the year 1964 forty percent of America's population was under twenty years of age. For the first time both middle and working class youths were acquiring an affluent lifestyle. Disposable income came from part-time work and pocket money, which gave youths some form of spending power, which gave them a sense of independence. This mind you were what Wicke's point out was due to America's economic growth and capitalism, which was reinstated in the country.…
