The idea of the husband as the primary breadwinner is portrayed through several institutions that reinsert conservative values. Education is an example of an intuition which illustrates that women’s primary role is maternal and that she should stay at home and take care of children. For instance in the early education system women were taught to learn more practical rather than academic, which would not have given them the skills to work and earn money. These beliefs…

Women today are still discriminated against. We don't make as much as men doing the same job, often only getting 67% of what a man gets. Women are entering the legal provision today in unprecedented numbers. Relatively few, however, become partners in the firms they enter. Of the 178 partners at Skadden, Arps in 1989, only 23, including Peggy Kerr, were women. But women have not achieved economic "parity" [equality] with men. A 1987 Congressional survey reported that women, on average, take home 68 percent of what men earn. That statistic, combined with the fact that many women are raising children alone, helps explain why far more women than men are living in poverty. Representative Barbara B. Kennelly (D-CT) says, "I think the most chilling line of the report is that women college graduates...earn on a…
In this column, “What Happened to Working Women in America?,” the writer, Gail Collins illustrates the reason why there is a need for women to come into the workforce in America, using a satirical, yet earnest tone throughout the piece. Not as many women are in the workforce, because there are very limited opportunities to alleviate the other obligations, such as raising children, that these women face daily throughout America. To cause an increase of women in the working environments, the US needs to give these women opportunities that are beneficial, to grow into people of the…
This can lead to less pension being paid to women due to the fact they have paid less national insurance in their lifetime.…
The roots of women’s poverty can be found in the way they are treated when they are in paid employment, and the situation in which they find themselves if they are not. Women who work full-time year-round earn only 71% of the average earnings of men working full-time. Wage gaps between women and men are even higher when hourly wage rates are compared. Most women don’t have pension plans at work, nor do most men, but women’s low wages make it almost impossible for them to save for retirement.…
Women earn 77 percent of what men earn for the same job (Edmonds, 2014). That equals about .77 cents of every dollar that a man earns. We as women are losing 23 cents just because we are women. I have chosen to write about women’s equality using the utilitarian and deontology ethical theories. The world today is a much different world to live in for women, yet it is much the same in other countries as it has been for centuries. Even if they have so many other obstacles to overcome, woman still find a way to prevail. Woman still get the short end of the stick most days with lower income than men, inadequate training for jobs, losing their jobs because of family obligations and in some instances not even a choice on the size of their families.…
This research done on the topic of vulnerable groups in the population seeks to understand the hardships and challenges a group of aggregates faces in a life span. Vulnerability is generally referred to those individuals or groups who, due to age, poor health, susceptibility, minority status or their otherwise disempowered position in society may be prone to poor outcomes in health problems or mistreated physically, emotionally or psychologically. Although there are many groups that could be considered vulnerable in the population, this paper will discuss women as aggregates.…
Providing for yourself and your family is a basic necessity, but for generations this need was only allowed to be addressed by men. A woman had always played the supporting role in a household while the man worked and contributed to the house financially. Before it was acceptable for a woman to work, her role in society was simple; a caregiver that looked after the house and cared for the children. While this may sound appealing to some, women in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the Progressive Era, yearned to do their part in earning wages for their families. To overcome the difficulties that came along with reestablishing a social norm, women were forced through many hardships to prove that they were able to stand among men as a prominent…
In her essay in Women: A Journal of Liberation magazine published in 1975, "My Mother Never Worked," Bonnie Smith-Yackel, author of several essays, book reviews and short stories in various magazines and newspapers, proclaims that society belittles women and the work they do. She does so by sharing a glimpse of the hard labor her mother did in her adult life, such as doing strenuous work on a farm with her husband, raising eight children and many more tasks as a mother, such as, keeping the house clean, sewing and cooking for her enormous family. She ends the essay with a discouraging view of a conversation with a social security office worker, shortly after her mother's death, who denies her of a death benefit check, simply because her mother did not work under the government for her pay.…
Caring for the elderly: Middle-aged women have been turned into an army of unpaid carers…
Women who were widowed or divorced, or whose husbands had l left them, struggled to keep their families alive; single women had to fend for themselves. These women were truly on the margins, practically invisible. “We did not go hungry, but we lived lean.” That sums up the experience of many families during the 1930’s.…
It is no secret that for centuries, women have faced years and years of discrimination, inferiority to men, and being viewed as less than human by society. Women have had to fight for their right to vote amongst other legal rights, and for their independence from their husbands. “When American women began to enter the labor force in the nineteenth century, the relatively few jobs open to them were highly segregated by gender” (Spain 1992: 14). The first women’s labor union began to form by the end of the 1930’s. Women’s activism began to increase, leading to a new reform in paid work and the rise in feminism in the midst of a new labor movement (Gregory 2003: 25). By the 1940’s, the transition of the housewife to that of a working woman began to trend. Women began to venture out of the home in search of employment and educational opportunities to help provide for their families, since their…
How age impact the elderly in their day lives. When you see an elderly person you think slow moving and a change in attitude. They also give a good outlook on life when they decide to tell life experiences or stories. Most people understand older people differently, sometimes it is hard but then again it is as easy as the alphabet.…
