Question: Discuss Australia’s three main contributions to the United Nations
Australia has a huge contribution to the United Nations now and in the past in three major aspects, financially, providing personnel for security operations and help peace keepers. The first is financial contributions, on average Australia contributes US$22.9 million dollars per year. Australia also has a major contribution to the UN in troops and soldiers to help them in many-sided peace and security operations. The last major way the Australia contributes to the UN is in in peace operations, roughly 65 000 Australian personnel have taken part in more than 50 peace keeping operations. This means that Australia has gathered volunteers and given them to the United Nations so that they can be used inn places where people are need to help keep security. Australia also contributes volunteers to different operations that are supported and funded by the UN. Australia has provided more than 65 000 personnel to United Nations peace and security operations since 1947, of these 20 000 where involved in different operations that where funded by the UN. Australia had contributed many different people to the different United Nation security operations, it is because we have contributed so many of the personnel, and again in comparison to the size of our country the number is magnified even more, that it is one of the top three ways that Australia contributes to the United …show more content…
Australia has a large contribution in the Peace and security operations of the UN as mentioned before. Part of the United Nations role in peacekeeping is it invites member states to contribute soldiers or people with other special skills to work in an area of the world that is troubled or where outbreaks of conflict may happen in the future. The United Nations aims to stop war before it even begins. An example of a force that does these operations is United Nations Assistance Mission to Rwanda (UNAMIR). Australian’s were the first peacekeepers to serve under the United Nations peace organisations when they sent military observers to Indonesia in 1947. About 70 000 Australian people have partaken in more than 50 different peace keeping operations, in about 25 different conflicts. Australia was the first country to help the United Nations out in their peacekeeping sector. This means that peace operations has to be one of the three key contributions that Australia has given to the United Nations because when the United Nations needed men to help them keep peace in Indonesia we helped and since then we have continued to help out has shown by the
