What A Fairytale 'How Jack Did To Seek His Fortune'
By definition, a fairytale “is a fictional story with folklore characters.” A fairytale may also contain talking animals as they did in this particular story. This story contains at least five folklore characters that process some human traits. In this case, the dog, cat, goat, bull, and rooster are all folklore characters. The genre of “How Jack went to seek his fortune” is a fairytale. I don’t feel this story will fit into any of the other genres.

2. What is the exposition of the story? Summarize it in your own words and provide an example of the text.
The exposition in this story would be Jack making the decision to go out and seek his fortune and when he actually set out to accomplish that decision. At the beginning of the fairytale Jack has decided he will seek his fortune and take the necessary action to get it done by actually taking the journey, “one morning he started to go and seek his fortune.” This is the beginning of the action in this story. As he continued along his way, other characters joined him on this quest.

3. What is the rising action or actions in this story? What make this the rising action, in your opinion?

The rising action that takes place is when the Baudelaire children arrive to Count Olaf's large home. They expected a nicer home and parent but the children did not want to be picky and judgmental. First impressions are not always right, but this one was definitely a correct first impression as Count Olaf is not a marvelous parent indeed. Out of the whole house, or mansion, they shared one room with one bed. There were hundreds of bedrooms in the mansion, but being the selfish person he is, Count Olaf prohibited multiple rooms for the children to sleep…

“Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff starts out Tub waiting for his friends to pick him up. The suspense starts with rising action by his friends being over an hour late. I chose “Hunters in the Snow to be the more suspense than “The Cask of the Amontillado.” Hunters keeps the reader on edge by displaying three different personalities. Confrontation due to human nature. The reader may question whether they are going to show up at all. This is an example of rising action. When Frank and Kenny show up they most run over Tub. Frank and Kenny both team up against Tub. The friends are going hunting together and with the two against the other one it builds suspense of what will happen in the woods. While hunting, Kenny lets out he has a secret with Frank, Tub wants to know what the secret is. Kenny is obnoxious and dangerous with the rifle. He shoots the pole for no reason other than hating it, then he shoots the dog, and then aims the gun at Tub. This is leading to climax of the story. The reader may wonder if Tub is going to die at this point in the story and his friends leave him there to be found, or is Tub going to defend himself and shoot Kenny. Could Frank and Tub leave wounded Kenny or bury him? This is another rising action in the climax. The three friends tell the owner of the land that the dog has been shot. This is another example of suspense will the owner kill them for killing the dog or will he let them go? Kenny hasn’t told his friends the owner had asked him to shoot the dog, is how…

The falling action is when the Hutchinsons get the lottery. Tessie Hutchinson, the wife, shouting and saying that the lottery is not fair as her husband does not get enough time to choose the paper he wants. As the lottery is the tradition and the townspeople are not able to change it, the result remain the same which is stoning of Tessie Hutchinson. The resolution is when no one could stop the townspeople from stoning Mrs. Hutchinson to death and they are not feeling any guilty for murdering someone because it is not considered as murderous but this is just what they often do. The rising and falling action are connected because the author introduces the lottery to be a tradition and as the falling action, there is nothing can be done because the townspeople are not brave enough to defy the brutally violent tradition. The crisis, falling action and resolution are all related when the winner of the lottery, who is dared to challenge it being stoned to death by the townspeople. The setting helps to build mood and lead the readers to think that there will be a happy ending but it foreshadows exactly the opposite of what the readers…

One example of a fairytale in the novel is the Little Seamstress being referred to as a princess. Another example would be the Tailor being called the king of the mountain. The third example is the mountain the leads to the princess’s house that the boys travel to get to her. The final example is the raven that is in the path that Lou takes on the mountain. I can conclude from these examples that Dai Sijie attempts to makes this novel more than sad ending. At the end though prince charming does not get his princess.…
