Whaley Comments On Violence In Football Summary
In “Bills GM Doug Whaley Comments on Violence in Football, injuries and more” by Tyler Conway they speak about the comment that the Bills GM made on a radio show yesterday. Yesterday the Bills general manager Doug Whaley appeared on a radio show and when asked about one of his players had some interesting comments “This is the game of football,” he said, “Injuries are apart of it. It’s a violent game that I personally don’t think humans are supposed to play.” This is a very interesting comment from a person who has made a career and millions of dollars off of the game. The tone of the article is that it was a bad decision made by Mr. Whaley, because the NFL will not be happy about a comment that hurts their campaign the football is safe. …show more content…
Whaley aren’t necessarily in bad taste because according to the poll on the bleacher report website 76.6% of people agree with him. But there is one major difference between the people who agree with him and Mr. Whaley himself. I bet that those other people didn’t make millions of the game, and they didn’t spend their entire life playing and coaching. That right there is what makes the comments bad because it make him look bad along with the rest of the league. It makes it sound like the NFL is forcing its players to do something unnatural and extorting them to get rich and for people’s entertainment. Which comes at a horrible time because of the allegations that the NFL are fighting. I mean could you imagine if a scientist made millions from genetics and then came out and said I don’t think human were meant to mess with genes. Everyone would be up and arms about it. Well this is pretty much the same thing. You can’t spend most of you life doing something say it’s something humans shouldn’t do and then continue to do it. That’s hypocritical and not morally correct. Is the game starting to get dangerous do to the evolution of humans to become bigger and stronger; yes, but this doesn’t mean that humans shouldn’t play it. It just means the there needs to be better equipment and more measures in place to insure that they are safe. The game hasn’t even necessarily become more dangerous. Are there more injuries; yes, but we are also more

One rule that has been changed this season is when a player loses his helmet, the play is immediately whistled dead. And now during the field-goal the defense cannot position any player on the line directly across from the snapper, who is considered defenseless. While NFL is actually concerned of the players health risks there are other sports who don’t do much about the health risks. UFC is an american mixed martial arts sport. UFC allows kicks to the head. Being able to kick the opponent in the head is ridiculous. A fighter on the receiving end of a knockout has been concussed. A concussion will have a negative long term effect on a person’s health, yet we so often hear of a fighter being “okay” after being knocked out. The rules of this sport should be modified immediately because lives are at risk. It shouldn't matter if the “sprite” of the game is changed, the lives of the athlete matter…

The National Football League’s chronic brain injury rates are increasing very quickly, causing the league to increase protocol to provide better protection for the players. The new rules in the National Football League are changing the way the game is being played and the way it affects the players. One of the many ways it affects the players is benefiting their health, and that’s why most of the new rules are added into the NFL. There is an average of 128 concussions per year and about nine concussions per week. There are positive ends and negative ends of the whole situation that can make the game boring for the players and also the spectators. This also makes the game safer for the players in their long-term life from their kids to their own health. The NFL could be changing for the better, or for the worse of it.…

The number of concussions in just the preseason games is up 50% than last year’s same games. The first myth is that the NFL is on their way to resolving its crisis on concussions. Almond emphasizes that the NFL has no crisis with concussions it has a problem with violence. Colliding together makes soft organs smash against their skulls, and no miracle or rule change can undo the physics and physiology of the football game.…

The N.F.L created the head, neck, and spine committee with the intention of diagnosing, preventing, and treating any N.F.L football player that sustains an injury, including concussions. However, concussions remain a major issue happening in the football world and players continue to remain affected by them. In fact during the 2015 pre and regular season games, 271 players sustained concussions, making it a 31.6 increase from 2014 (Breslow). This set of statistics proves that the concussion crisis continues to increase because each year more players continue to become affected by concussions. Furthermore, it tells people that concussions don’t only happen in regular games, but during pre season games as well. In addition concussions regularly occur in highschool and little league football. As a matter of fact, around 47% of concussions occur in high school students (Sports). Which represents one of the highest percentages among other high school sports. This again proves that concussions do not only happen in the major leagues. The N.F.L also plays a major rule in these outside leagues. The New York Times stated, “the league’s public position could influence other levels of football because many college, high school and youth leagues take their cues…

If the NFL truly cares about its players like they preach, then they should be taking stronger actions than they have now. The NFL should be enforcing stronger punishments and investing more money towards research of concussions and head trauma in the league. This would better the NFL and its players by making it a much safer league. In the end players want to remember their time on the field, not forget it from not being protected…

In previous years before technology was so readily accessible to near about everyone, the NFL basically took an out of sight, out of mind stance on domestic violence. They believed it to be a family matter that did not affect their organization and that it was none of their business. They took this point on the matter even though statistics showed that a good number of professional and collegiate athletes had been reported to the police for violent acts against women. The article states that in 1994 the Washington Post reported that in a 5-year span between 1989 to 1994, 140 violent acts against women were reported among these athletes. However, these occurrences were never big news stories for the media until the OJ Simpson case in 1994. Because of the media attention this case received, a closer look was taken at the crimes committed among professional football players. The most common crime committed was violent acts against women. The NFL continued to turn the other cheek to these facts, stating that it did not influence their business, and it was not their responsibility to discipline the players for acts committed off of the field. Therefore, players that had…

“Pro football is like nuclear warfare. There are no winners, only survivors.” -Frank Gifford. Football is a full contact sport, so it is not supposed to be safe, and no one ever expected it to be safe. Recently the effects of countless head injuries endured by players many years ago had just started to surface. The NFL has started to attempt to make professional football as safe as they possibly can without ruining the game. The majority of the rules the NFL has in place are necessary when it comes to how the game is played and maintaining the safest environment on the football field for the players, however some of the other rules being added to the rulebook are arguably unnecessary and truthfully ridiculous. Players are more often than not…

The movie concussion was the first time of the correlation between concussions and football. As I read Nationwide Children’s article, “Concussion in sports”, allowed me to increase my knowledge. Throughout the article, the author categorized what is a concussion and how it affects players. During reading, I found that concussions are a serious issue in sports, because it can cause severe brain damage to an athlete. This is concerning because the brains is one of the most important parts of a person’s body and if effected it could change a person life forever. Furthermore, I found it upsetting that the NFL does not make the risk of playing football known. Although, I understand the NFL provides minorities with opportunities to become successful.…

In America sports are important but football seems to be vastly more important and more widely known as a specifically American sport. The overwhelming topic on any sports network such as ESPN and the NFL Network are the growing number of lawsuits against the National Football League concerning head injuries and lack of concern that the leaders of the NFL had about the risk players were being put in. Both sides of the lawsuits are passionate about their ideas and making sure that they are not only heard but that action will take place to resolve the situation as a whole. George Orwell states that “one can choose – not simply accept – the phrases that will best cover the meaning, and then switch around and decide what impression one’s words are likely to make on another person”. (115) The power of words can make or break an argument; the words surrounding the NFL Controversy are no different inevitable, permanent and intentionally misleading players putting them at serious health risk.…

History, science, momentum, present and future. The NFL may be the most dangerous sport to play in the United States. I mean, where else do two people that can run at speeds of 30 miles an hour, hit each other head on going full speed? Nowhere. The game of football, especially at the higher levels, is becoming increasingly dangerous as the athletes keep getting bigger, faster, and stronger. Until a couple years ago the research of concussion and helmet safety have both been on hold.…

Yes, I absolutely agree a football team should permanently remove a player accused of assault. Assault is a serious crime in America, and is not looked lightly upon. Although for some reason, Americans want to turn their heads away from a star athlete being accused for this horrible crime. My reasons for agreeing to remove a player are: football is glorified in America, assault is a horrible crime, and American’s morals are going out the window.…

Doctors proved that, “Recent studies have shown that head injuries sustained by NFL players can eventually lead to debilitating, chronic brain diseases such as dementia” (“NFL Head Injuries). This is a problem because the NFL isn’t doing enough to protect their players. Yes, the players do provide entertainment for everyone, but if the NFL keeps being careless many franchise players won’t be able to play. NFL players should be better protected by the NFL so players don’t develop brain disease, and won’t have to get sidelined during games due to concussions. Doctors researched and found out that, “A total of 87 out of 91 former NFL players have tested positive for the brain disease” (“FRONTLINE”). This shows that the NFL doesn’t protect their players enough. Only 4 former NFL players out of 91 weren’t diagnosed with concussions. The NFL needs to take better care of players so this doesn’t happen as often. Although brain diseases due to concussions are a tremendous problem, one thing that is much worse than that is a player's chances of getting another concussion. Once a player suffers their first concussions they are more likely to develop a concussion. “Studies show, after the first concussion, the athlete is four times more likely to suffer another” (“Concussions in Sports”). This is very important because as players get more and more concussions. Eventually they will develop permanent brain damage or they…
