WGU Schools and Society task 3
Schools & Society Task 3 Part B. The 3 sources I used were New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers and School Leaders, Core Curriculum Content Standard and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. New Jersey's Standards are one of 44 states that are involved in the Common Core State Standards. This makes New Jersey standards the same of most other states in the United States. But the Common Core State Standards are only for Mathematics and Language Arts. New Jersey has their own for Visual and Performing Arts, Comprehensive Health and Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, World Languages and Technology. The first document, New Jersey Professional Standard for Teachers and School Leaders , was found on New Jersey's Department of Education website as a 34 page pdf . The first 7 pages of the pdf was names of different New Jersey Board members from different counties and such. After that it gave a two page description/introduction of the professional standards for teachers. This document listed 10 standards; subject matter knowledge, human growth & development, diverse learners, instructional planning & strategies, assessment, learning environment, special needs, communication, collaboration & partnerships, and professional development. Each standard had three parts; Knowledge-teachers know and understand, Dispositions- teachers value and are committed, and Performances-teachers apply and engage in activities. The statements listed under each part of each standard was clear and specific. They were not written as objectives. The Common Core Curriculum Content was a website off of the New Jersey Department of Education website. It was very difficult to navigate. The website's Core Curriculum Standards have not been updated since 2010. The document was organized by not only content but by grade and year as well. It's introduction page only consisted of two paragraphs. When I tried to get to the Mathematics Common Core a page came up with video links for teachers to watch about aligning content to different level Rubrics. Upon finding the content standards they were not able to be viewed on the web page but was available to be downloaded a word document. I downloaded the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards for Mathematics document. It was 63 pages long. The standards in this document was listed in the form of a table. For example standard 4.1 Number and Numerical Operations had a different Numerical Operations standard for Grade 6 through and 12th grade. The Five Core Propositions page was found on the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards website. It is the National Board Certified Teacher's version of the Hippocratic Oath that doctors take. It applies to all National Board Certified Teacher's across all grade and content areas. It covers being committed to students and and managing their learning, knowing the content they teach and how to teach it to students, learning from experience, and being a member of a learning community. Each of the 5 core propositions listed on the page is a hyperlink which when clicked on leads you to another page which contains bullet-ed points about which that go into detail about what each proposition entails.

Part C for Schools & Society Task 3 The New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers and school Leaders, Core Curriculum Content Standard and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards documents/websites I reviewed has both similarities and differences. All three documents are similar in that they are all available online and can be applied in more then one subject area. Even though the Core Curriculum Content Standards are limited to just Language Arts and Mathematics. A consistent theme in all the the documents in the effort to be consistent in what the students learn and the qualifications of the teacher who teaches them.
Some differences are how the documents are set up, what they pertain to and how comprehensible they were. The New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers and School leaders document is in the form of a PDF while the Core Curriculum Content Standard and the National Board for Professional Teaching standards are on the web. The National board for Professional Teaching standards shows support for the educational process by covering instruction and assessment. While the Core content standards cover Curriculum. The Core Curriculum Content Standard document supports the educational process in that it provides the same standards to students in the same grade across the state. The New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers & School Leaders ensures that all teachers have the same certification to teach a specific subject and the same level of credentials to become a teacher. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards holds all schools accountable for teachers meeting National requirements to become a teacher. Teachers could enhance student learning by following and respecting the Five Core Propositions. New Jersey teacher's knowing the New Jersey Professional Standards for teachers would benefit how a teacher teaches which would benefit the student and what they learn. The Core Curriculum Content Standards for Mathematics and Language Arts enhances student learning because it will provide consistency on what students learn and when they learn it throughout grades in 44 states.

What I would most like to see in the public discourse about the Common Core State Standards would be to separate consideration of the standards from opposition to testing and teacher evaluation. When Bruni indicts parents for coddling their children by opposing the common core he is mixing up the common core state standards with the assessments. But that’s to be expected, many others are doing this too, including those who stand up in opposition to the tests, they often sound like they’re against the CCSS…

The Common Core State Standards Initiative (also known simply as Common Core) is an educational initiative that details what primary and secondary students should understand at the end of each grade in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Common Core's background dates to the 1990s with the inception of what was known as the "Standards & Accountability Movement," which sought to reform the educational standards upon which students were measured in relation to college and workplace readiness. In 2009, at the behest of the National Governors Association, the Common Core State Standards Initiative was officially introduced as policy. The Obama Administration, using federal 'Race to the Top' grants as an incentive, urged the states to adopt Common Core by August 2, 2010, upon which forty-one states pledged to do so, with four explicitly opting out. In addition to the original four states that chose not to adopt Common Core, eight others have (since 2010) withdrawn, Throughout the course of this essay, I will examine both the pros and cons of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.…
