Executive Summary of my Conclusions:

Present System:

The Westmount Retirement Residence (WRR) is calculating the cost per resident by dividing the total costs by number of residents. This number is then multiplied by inflation of 5 to 8 percent to bring the estimated costs for the coming year. This is the base cost for Studio apartments, and then the cost for the one bed room and two bed rooms are calculated by adding 25 % and 50% on the base cost. So there was no system to calculate the varying service need required by different residents.
The net profit in year 2005 is 2.28%, very low net profit looking at the markets of the same industries. (See Exhibit 1)

Recommended System:

In the present system, all costs are considered as “fixed costs”. I feel, the costing can be done on activity based costing (ABC) (Eddie McLaney, Peter Atrill, 2010::400) (here in this case it is service based, need based). for Support services. Food services, Laundry service can be done by direct costing (variable costing) depends on the consumption of the resident, but this may take again a lot of expenditure to maintains individual costing and billing. Activity- based pricing (ABP) is a pricing method that combines market research data with cost accounting information to establish prices for products and services that result in designed profits .(internet resources)

Recommendation 1:

The net profit must be at least 15% as net profits in the hospitality or caretaking

The cost for a person to stay at this home for long and short term would around $300 per day. The fees are due monthly, biyearly, or annually. As far as the appearance of the nursing home the outside the building could be updated. The windows are old and shake when doors close and the curtains do not give a lot of privacy because they are somewhat see-through. The inside is clean and pleasant to be in for a comparably cheaper nursing home. There is a nice outdoor area that is private and lined with tall bushes for the residents to enjoy. Along walls there are several handrails to assist them as well as in the restrooms. The staff is carful of the time of day that they clean or have hazardous areas that put the patients at risk. Each room has an easily accessible restroom that is decorated with their personal products. The noise level is low unless one of the residents is screaming, which was the case two of the times that I visited. The home is wheelchair accessible everywhere that the residents are allowed. The lighting is very florescent and in my opinion uncomfortable, but the residents have the option of putting a lamp in their rooms so they can turn the bright lights off. There are several areas for the residents to visit with family, friends or doctors. They can go to the patio, their bedrooms, the visiting room or the game room. The bedrooms are furnished with a TV, a hospital bed, and a dresser. Some of the rooms are bare and some are homier, it depends on what the resident brings with them. The nursing home has a reputation of being rated 3 out 5 compared to other facilities. If their needs do not fit a persons likes or budget they openly refer people elsewhere. The local ombudsman visits a multiple times a year to check that the facility is following policy’s codes and laws. If I had a loved one that was in need of a nursing home I am not sure if I would want them to live at…
