1. Situational Leadership provides a simple and logical framework with four basic decision-making styles - authoritative, consultative, facilitative, and delegative. Briefly describe these styles and describe when they are appropriate to use.
Our textbook states that authoritative decision-making style, “applies in situations where the manager has the necessary experience and information to reach a conclusion and followers do not possess the ability, willingness, or confidence to help” (p. 295). This would be appropriate when you are the only source of information or expertise.
According to p. 296 of our textbook, consultative decision-making styles are a “valuable strategy when the manager recognizes that the followers also possess some experience or knowledge of the subject and are willing but not yet able to help”. This style is appropriate when there is more time to make a decision on important issues and requires input from people who can be directly impacted by those decisions.
Facilitative decision-making, as stated on p. 296 of our textbook as well, “is a cooperative effort in which manager and followers work together to reach a shared decisions”. This approach would be useful when dealing with an able, but not confident follower.
Delegative decision making, covered on p. 297 of our textbook, is used “when follower high in readiness who have the experience and information needed to make the proper decision or recommendation”. This style is appropriate when “the manager can look forward to a high level of performance by saying, ‘You know this subject. Work on it and let me know what you come up with’” (p.

    A general decision making criterion involves several factors. What this journal focuses on is the influence of others’ decisions on one’s own, namely, the act of “looking up and looking around”. In any given situation it is human nature to first “look up”- that is, see what a more knowledgeable person (such as the boss) is doing, and then take a decision as to how one would act. The second option is to “look around”- that is, see what one’s colleagues and peer are doing and follow suit. The author also writes on how “decision-making paralysis” hits everyone from middle range managers to even the top managers and CEO.     As according to Hersey Blanchard model, a leader has to match his leadership style as according to the needs of maturity of subordinates which moves in a stage and has cycle (Draft, & Lane, 2015, p.68). Leadership style is classified in four categories based on the combination of two considerations, relationship behavior and task behavior (Draft, & Lane, 2015, p.69). A subordinate maturity is defines as the ability and willingness of the people of directly for their own behavior. If the leadership style is combined with maturity, there are four styles – Telling, selling, participating and delegating. So in this situation, McCarthy has well analyzed the situation and then calls them and tells the situation and defines the pros and cons and then give opportunity to participate in the decision making. As according to Vroom-Jago Model, there is a decision tree that helps the manager to take decisions (Draft, & Lane, 2015, p.81). There are five alternatives which are available with McCarthy. First, he can make the decision and inform others. This is the same situation what he was practicing initially. Second, he can collect the information from workers and take decision. But in this case, workers will not participate in decision making process. Third he can discuss the case with individual candidates and ask their suggestions without bringing them in to one group. Fourth you can call the group for meeting and discuss the case and its solutions. But finally, you only take decisions. In fifth alternative, he can call the group and give them ample opportunity to discuss the situation and take the decision and it will be finally implemented without any interference.
