Numerical data is in our everyday life. Someone teaching elementary class to a stay at home parent balancing the checkbook is in constant contact with numerical information. Statistics is used not only by businesspeople; we all also apply statistical concepts in our lives, (Lind, Marchal, Wathen, 2011). The different type of numerical data is separated into different sections of information to make it easier to interpret. Statistics is the science of data. It involves collecting, classifying, summarizing, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting numerical information, (Lind, Marchal, Wathen, 2011). This type of data can vary by the industry it is used in. In business it can be used to determine wages or the unemployment rate. This information is vital to inform potential companies to relocate into a given populated city. The different types of statistics are broken down into two forms. The first is the descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics utilizes numerical and graphical methods to look for patterns in a data set, to summarize the information revealed in a data set, and to present the information in a convenient form, (McLaven, Benson, & Sincich, 2011). An example of descriptive statistics is gathering all the credit card sales in a given year and breaking it down into what credit card was used and how often. The second type is inferential statistics. Inferential statistics utilizes sample data to make estimates, decisions, predictions, or other generalizations about a larger set of data., (McLaven, Benson, & Sincich, 2011). An example of inferential statistics was given in the textbook about gathering the performance of 500 large companies and comparing that to the CEO’s salary. Once they have the information the efficiency of a CEO can be determined by the rating. Someone who might be searching for an effective CEO candidate can use this type of information. I have seen how statistics has been used in

There are two major types of statistics, descriptive and inferential. Descriptive statistics is defined by Lind (2011) as “methods of organizing, summarizing, and presenting data in an informative way” (p.6). An example of descriptive statistics would be a high school report showing that it had 300 graduates in 1990 and 450 graduates on 1991. The information that they provided described the amount of graduates that they had for each year. Inferential statistics is defined by Lind (2011) as “the methods used to estimate a property of a population on the basis of a sample” (p.7). If the same high school sent out a report showing the graduate numbers for 1999- the present to estimate the number of graduates that they would have for this school year, those statistics would be inferential because they are used to estimate future outcomes.…

Descriptive statistics are used to organize and describe the characteristics of a collection of data. Inferential statistics are used to make inferences from a smaller group of data. Descriptive statistics are used primaraly for larger groups and used to collect more amounts of information while inferential is used more for a smaller group. Less information because there is less people and or information that is being refered to. Inferential statistics bring information which is often called a sample. This is a portion or a subset of a population.…

The introduction to processed foods took the world by storm, with quicker food preparation, less time spent cleaning, drive-thru access and the introduction to new recipes. Long before processed foods such as the Twinkie, Honey bun, Spam, frozen dinners, milk, etc; people consumed more wholesome foods naturally loaded with nutrients the human body needed to sustain itself. Processed foods did not exist until the early 19th Century and have since become highly advertised and subsidized by the government. Whole foods on the other hand receive little advertisement and no government subsidies, leading people away from choosing a healthier lifestyle. I believe that processed foods may perhaps taste, look and smell better than their natural whole food counterpart does, yet can you really afford to risk your health for the sake of being happy you had the ability to choose your meal?…

According to Bennett, Briggs & Triola (2009), descriptive statistics transforms data into a picture of information that is readily understandable using measures such as mean, median, mode, variation and standard deviation. Inferential statistics help researchers decide whether their outcomes are a result of factors planned within design of the study or determined by chance referencing probability values (P) to indicate significance of the change in results (Bennett, Briggs & Triola, 2009). “The two approaches are often used sequentially in that first, data are described with descriptive statistics, and then additional statistical manipulations are done to make inferences about the likelihood that the outcome was due to chance through inferential statistics” (Streiner & Norman, 1996).…

Statistical data dates back to as early as Ancient Greek time, where it was introduced by John Graunt, William Petty and Pascal in the 16th century. It was then re-introduced by Gottfriend Achenwall in the 17th century. This was a very exciting time for scientists, astronomers and physicists alike as it raised the confidence and knowing that the laws of nature were not of divine intervention. As the years went on, new mathematical discoveries were made such as census data, economy, mortality demographics, and the International Statistical Congresses, which all led to changing its name to “statistics”.…

Statistics plays a vital role in every fields of human activity. Statistics has important role in determining the existing position of per capita income, unemployment, population growth rate, housing, schooling medical facilities etc…in a country. The statistical tools like Index number, correlation, time series analysis, regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and multivariate analysis help to analysis data and predict about future. Now statistics holds a central position in almost every field like Industry, Commerce, Trade, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Biology, Botany, Psychology, astronomy etc…, . So application of statistics is very wide. Statistics helps in providing a better understanding and exact description of a phenomenon of nature. It helps in proper and efficient planning of a statistical inquiry in any field of study by collecting an appropriate quantitative data. Statistics helps in understanding the nature and pattern of variability of a phenomenon through quantitative observations and helps in drawing valid inference, along with a measure of their reliability about the population parameters from the sample data. Statistics are the ‘straws out of which Economists have to make bricks’. Statistical data and their analysis are used to solve a variety of economic problems such as in consumption, production, distribution of income and assets, poverty, unemployment etc. These problems are described, compared and correlated by using statistics. Use of statistics in Economics has led to the formulation of many economic laws like Engel’s law of consumption, Pareto’s Laws of distribution of income…
