We Owe It All to History
I’ll admit I have never before questioned why we have a class such as U.S. History. As I plop into my seat and listen to lectures about so and so writing the document of such and such I consider it quite unmoving. But as I actually take the time to think about it, I realize history is so crucial to not just our country, but the world. Our history basically defines us, and gives us a sense of cohesiveness. When getting to know someone, most people share information about their pasts. Your own personal history makes you who you are today; from your first broken bone to your first child. Although not everyone experiences specific events of history first hand, they can still

History is story we tell ourselves as Khalil Gibran Muhamad defined it , or Story we tell ourselves about how past explains our present and the way story is told is shaped by contemporary needs as Aurora Levnis Morales nicely put it. Likewise it could be stated that we become stories we tell ourselves. Thus, history has role in construction of our identity. Given the importance of the story for us, could it be different story then the one we are told in mainstream media and thought in schools? The one that empowers us instead of enslaving us?…

History is a chronological record of events that have come to pass. For many of us the study of history and how individuals managed to live their lives in the old days has become unimaginable, especially in today’s technologically advanced society. It’s comical to witness the younger generation display a sense of awe at events that you and I experienced as normal everyday events, such things as turning the television channels manually, or making a phone call by using a pay phone, or even writing a letter to a love one and waiting up to a couple of weeks for a response. These insignificant events may not mean much to the new generations, but it means a lot to…

History always comes to an equilibrium with time, so does everything else. Nobody is purely saint or evil, and no history is purely great or dark. While it is impossible to learn all the history to reach that optimum equilibrium, it is the College Board’s responsibility to make sure that the curriculum is balanced between progresses and setbacks. History is history because time has past. What we currently have will become history as time flows. Therefore history is not just past events, but rather past events seen and evaluated by current eyes with current values. American history taught in other countries will be different from that taught domestically, since people with different identities share different values. Students with different races will feel differently when learning the same materials. Hence, I believe that learning history is not only about “what should be taught” or “what should be emphasized;” it is about how to draw connections between historical events to currents events to foster existing values while adding what we do not know to construct…

History is the study of the past; however, every person’s opinion varies and tends to make history a sore subject. In today’s society the average American knows little to almost nothing when it comes to history. During high school many people have thought of history being not as important as other subjects and put it off to the side. Yet later on in life they have watched a historically based movie or television show and found interest in history. Learning from movies that inaccurately portray history is embarrassing, but it can also motivate people to learn more about the topic.…

According to James W. Loewen in Lies My Teacher Told Me, American students enter college less knowledgeable about their own history than any other subject. American history is the least liked and worst remembered subject in American curricular. Loewen argues that history is the only subject one has to unlearn in college because high school presents inaccurate information to students. Who is to blame? Despite the indicting title, James Loewen does not appear to be blaming only teachers for student ignorance. Loewen blames textbooks, publishers, and instructors for students knowing too little accurate information, too much inaccurate information, and not caring about any information.…

A three-hour bus ride, a modest amount of time standing in the heat and a short walk through history. Standing where the Battle of Horseshoe Bend took place, words from class float through my head as I picture the battle taking place. I can't express how much more I appreciate having been able to walk where the men and women before me made history. Regretfully, I am reminded of how little I cared for history and wished I had. Teachers would tell me that we study history because if we don't, "history will repeat itself." What a terrible sell for history! If I were to sit down with my son, future children, and leaders, I would paint a story or take them on an adventure like we did today. History is the language we all must learn to speak.…

It is said that “history is written by the victors” (Winston Churchill) or rather “History is a set of lies agreed upon.” (Napoleon Bonaparte). Unfortunately, today in the state of Texas both statements appear to be true. The study of history is intended to help one piece together the constant evolution of past events, religions, philosophies, politics, societies, and economics. By cutting out portions of historical information students have missing pieces in the puzzle of history and this limits many student’s potential of fully understanding the complete picture. As a result this cultivates ignorance in our complex multicultural society. There have been many historical figures that were very good at limiting information and presenting a particular ideology, this is also known as propaganda.…

After attending the conference of “Soul of a Citizen” it had me pondering about what Dr. Paul Leob had spoken about. The information he had share was so rich, but with little time to spare I’ve learnt a handful of opinions and ideas he had to share. One of the most common elements Dr.Leob had shared in the conference was about the past and how he looked to the past to shape his future. Some people may have mixed feelings about looking to the pass as a source of guidance, and useful information. I took the information as valuable content, because I do look to the past to shape the way I view current assignments for college and even when it comes to politics.…

I decided to major in history to continue the legacy of storytelling that my professors have extended to me. Initially, I intend to teach at the high school level because I believe high school is when a student is most impressionable, seeking to establish the foundation of who they are and what they do to find fulfillment in life. History has helped me improve both in other classes and in different areas in my life, and I wish to do the same for my future students. It has developed my ability to write well, both for personal and professional purposes. It has encouraged a sense of criticism that I more readily seek to apply to any and all forms of information. It has increased my awareness…

It is true History was one of the classes that has been taught almost every year from elementary school and throughout all high school. The fact that history was one of the main courses during my education doesn’t really imply that I know a lot about it. My memories of what we were taught during these years are in fact vague, not to say that I don’t really remember anything from what our professors taught us.…

Another one it is because history also defines your identity. Everyone and everything cannot help but have a past. We all have origins we come from that sort of guide us to the people we become. For instance, I am of Hispanic origin, therefore I will be used to Quinceanera parties, eating tacos, etc. but someone from a different culture won’t have the slightest idea of what that even is. It is a beautiful thing to learn where your roots come from and see what life your ancestors went through, whether they experienced the a bad era like the…
