I consider myself very fortunate that I had options when my daughter came along. Not every mother is in this position. A deliberate decision was made at the time that I would retire from my job. From then on, my career consisted of taking care of my family and house. Promotions and a corner office disappeared from the picture, as did financial independence. Conferences were canceled. Casual clothing replaced suits, open sandals substituted for high heels. The result of all these changes is that now my house sparkles, my yard has flowers and the front porch is swept. My child comes home to me, unaccompanied by a latchkey. Let me tell you that it gives me a great deal of satisfaction and pride when I can show my "liberated" friend my cozy, clean and comfortable abode. She may have an eel skin purse, but she was deprived from comforting her baby when the first tooth broke through and from gloating when the first step was taken. I waited and knitted while my child took art lessons or practiced kick boxing after school. My rich friend had to work. Another housewife had to take her children to their various activities. Being at full-time housewife as a profession may have its dull and boring moments; so does ever other job. But, I enjoy the freedom to organize my day my way, get a college degree in my spare time or just be carefree for a few hours a day. I am my own boss. And that is what I call truly liberated and a dream job.
