Anthem is a story of man’s struggle to be free and to fight the masses of conformity. It tells of human nature and the want to gain all the knowledge that one could possibly attain. Man loses his safe haven and his security when he lets this lust for knowledge overpower him and lets it be seen by others. He becomes vulnerable Like Johann Faust, Prometheus sells his life for wisdom. Unlike Faust, however, Prometheus is expelled from his society but gains his freedom of individuality and his freedom of knowledge and the ability to understand. In Anthem, Prometheus and Gaea sin against society to become singular and understanding much like Adam and Eve’s sin against God when they ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge to gain wisdom; as a result, they can be compared to each other by there desire for learning and by their damnation.…

    Review of God's Daughters

In God’s Daughters Evangelical Women and the Power of Submission, Aglow is introduced as a group of women that form a meeting a few times a month to pray and talk about God. As the author Marie Griffith begins explaining the functions of Aglow, it starts to be clear that the women who attend these meetings are there for some type of support, comfort, and even a form of healing. Griffith explains that there are many women who actually find themselves going to church alone without their husbands and that “ it becomes clear that what was advertised as a workshop for dealing with irreligious husbands is actually a session on coping with unhappy, even unbearable, marriages and turning them into loving or at least endurable ones. “.…

After I had selected this chiastic psalm, I came across a large picture of the moon. Suspended in the blackness of space, I studied its massive size and numerous craters formed by meteors and asteroids. With a radius of over a thousand miles, truly, the moon is no ordinary creation. David was right in his assessment that “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him” (Psalm 8:3-4, King James Version)? The thought of God creating such a thing should make one fall to their face in awe and fear. In fact, after thinking on this reality, this holy fear gripped me and I wanted to reach for something solid, as if in a tornado, with my face touching the ground—hoping for mercy. Who can stand against Him? Indeed, these two distiches demonstrate how powerful our God is. Additionally, this is why I can appreciate this psalm. Because, when taking the time to break it down and meditate on the deeper meaning, you can walk away reverencing God more fully or the way that He deserves.…

The Pledge of Allegiance of the United States closes with the statement, “With liberty and justice for all”. For millions of refugees and immigrants, America represents freedom, safety, and most significantly, opportunity. The recent influx of illegal immigrants into America sparks debate over action and restrictions over the immigrants. Today in America, an increase in the presence of sanctuary cities brings forth an opportunity for low priority immigrants to remain in the country without the fear of deportation. The presence of these cities is quick to spark debate. In an article by Amanda Sakuma, Sakuma explores the entirety of sanctuary cities, and their influence on America as a whole. Through varying sentence structure, logical appeal,…

In the film Whose Life Is It Anyway? we are introduced to the character of Ken. Ken's life is changed after a life-altering car accident leaves him a quadriplegic. Ken, being unable to live the life he is accustomed asks to be released from the hospital and refuses medical treatment. Throughout this paper I will delve into the roles that work, play, and worship played in Ken's life both pre-accident and post-accident. The roles of work, play, and worship will also tie in with Ken's personal freedom, on how active Ken appears to be, and on the responsibilities Ken takes on day to day. While Ken is an interesting figure who seems to have his priorities in line both before and after his accident, there is very little effort to adapt to his new life which, in turn, comes into conflict with the way Ken sees leisure in his life.…

The Apostles’ Creed is a compilation of belief statements that embodies a widely accepted and terse summary of the fundamentals of Christianity, and although the Apostles’ Creed does not have the same authority as Scripture, this paper will seek to prove that if upheld to the apostolic tradition, or its orthodoxy, the creed’s summation of Christian doctrine is one that all believers should grasp, support, and consider.…

    Meaning of Life

In her article The Meaning of Lives, Susan Wolf, a moral philosopher and philosopher of action, investigates whether meaning can exist in lives without postulating the existance of God. Wolf establishes her position on this philosophical question from an agnostic perspective and rationally argues that such a question can in fact “fit within a negative or agnostic view about the meaning of life” (Wolf 63). With this paper, I will first summarize the prominent points of Wolf’s article then highlight and expound upon areas of her argument that contradict her line of reason. Lastly, I will introduce the theistic perspective on meaningful lives along with presenting Wolf’s reason and argument as supporting evidence for the theistic view.…
