Waterville Water: A Short Story
20 years ago, in the town of Waterville, water was the primary source for all things. The system for getting this water was a huge project, pipes connecting from all over the world from the water source to the main river in Waterville that took decades to build. Cars, electricity and countless everyday things ran off of this supply. This town was the last on Earth after the apocalypse which had wiped out a majority of the world and so the townspeople had never worried about the water running out. Until mid October 2064. William, a middle aged man, no wife or children, is a former Waterville citizen until he had gone crazy and killed several people, stating that the town wasn’t going to survive with so many people living in it and that the water was close to running out. He claimed that he knew the water wasn’t going to last, that God had sent him that message. The leader of this town, Mark, other council members and townspeople had not believed him. William knew that if he had gone back to Waterville then bad consequences would come. But he had a better idea; he found black oil and slicked his hair back, grabbed a handkerchief and wrapped it around his nose and mouth then finally put on sunglasses to hide his identity. They would never know it was him.
The day that changed Waterville forever was October 20th, 2064. The day had seemed normal, all of the townspeople had just gotten up and to their jobs when some realized something strange. There was no water. They thought this was very odd considering Mark had told them the water would never run out, that they had enough to last them the rest of their lives. A panic broke out, causing the townspeople to rush to the makeshift city hall to Mark and ask what is happening. He reassured them that he would figure out the issue as soon as he
