"Water: An Overlooked Essential Nutrient." My name is Lena Lockhart, and I have been asked to present arguments for your firm on the differences between water, and sports drinks Gatorade and PowerAde. I have found some interesting information, and this paper will present my findings. I am sure that this will be an informative look at the various ways of hydrating your body and help you to make a decision on what is best for you at any particular moment.
Water
Daily Recommendations It is recommended that an adult drink eight to ten eight-ounce glasses of water a day. Athletes and active teens should drink at least ten to twelve glasses of water daily. However, many foods and beverages contain water, which can make up part of this daily intake. Fresh fruits and vegetables, cooked vegetables, canned and frozen fruits, soups, stews, juices, and milk are all sources of water. Most fruits and vegetables contain up to 90 percent water, while meats and cheeses contain at least 50 percent. (http://www.faqs.org/nutrition/Smi-Z/Water.html#ixzz1Zf5TnTk9)

Nutrient content and benefits of consuming water
The nutrients sometimes found in drinking water at potentially significant levels of particular interest are:
• Calcium – important in bone health and possibly cardiovascular health
• Magnesium – important in bone and cardiovascular health
• Fluoride – effective in preventing dental caries
• Sodium – an important extracellular electrolyte, lost under conditions of excess sweat
• Copper – important in antioxidant function, iron utilization and cardiovascular health
• Selenium – important in general antioxidant function and in the immune system
• Potassium is important for a variety of biochemical effects but it is usually not found in natural drinking waters at

    For person 2(representing myself) my average before exercise is 18cm on the left and 16 cm on the right, after drinking Gatorade my average was 15 cm on the left and 12 cm on the right, after Powerade, my average was 17 on the left and 16 on the right and after water my average was 19 on the left and 18 on the right.AnalysisWe know that the process that allowed us to catch the ruler is: first , our eye saw the ruler. Then, our eye sent a message to the visual cortex, which sent a message to the motor cortex. The motor cortex sent a message to the spinal cord. The spinal cord sent a message to the muscles in our hand/fingers. Finally, our muscles contract to allow us to catch the ruler. Our brain and spinal cord make up our central nervous system. Our brain communicates with your muscles via the spinal cord using a form of electrical current (called action potential). In order to achieve quicker reaction times, the brain has to be able move information faster through the spine to reach the muscles. Sports drinks affect the rate of reaction because sport drink contains sodium and potassium so by drink the sport drink it increases sodium and potassium content on the extracellular matrix of neurons so that when an impulse goes through the neuron, there is a greater electrical gradient between the inside and outside of the axon, promoting faster diffusion. It also helps in restoring the original balance of the electron gradient, so it would allow one to fire neurons more quickly with a shorter "recharge" period.…

    This means less oxygen for muscles and the brain, causing a significant loss in cognition and energy. In 2005 Susan Shirreffs analyzed several studies related to athletic performance and hydration. The results of these studies vividly illustrate how dehydration impairs all aspects of athletics. Experiments were conducted that had athletes run for several miles at certain levels of hydration and dehydration. Shirreffs found that with as little as a two percent reduction in body mass due to water loss athletes performed significantly worse as their dehydration continued. Not only did dehydration cause a reduction in athleticism, but it was found motivation to exercise was influenced (2011). This is due to waters affect on endurance and blood flow. Without proper hydration blood flow is slowed and less oxygen is carried throughout the muscles. This causes significant and noticeable pain due to the cramping of muscles and the lessening of joint lubrication. Athletes studied with proper hydration were found to perform at much higher standards and with increased motivation. This means that by drinking water athletic performance can be increased exponentially (Kalman, 2010; Keneflick, 2012).
