The book Watched by CJ Lyons is an educational if fictional tale of people being targeted by cappers. Cappers are people who covertly take screenshots to bully, blackmail, and trade on the internet. This is a serious topic that doesn’t have nearly enough coverage making it the perfect book to be implemented into the school system. It is informative, interesting, and an inspiring book that draws the reader in while still getting its purpose across. This book explains the dangers of capping and blackmail even better than many articles and nonfiction books. It describes the horrors of the Internet and how ruthless these capers can be in a way that the teenagers can understand. It displays strength and courage while teaching the reader that they can make it through any hardships they face as well. Watched also discusses some rather taboo topics in a way that can show the reader there are other answers. For instance it shows the characters struggling to ask for help, but overcoming their pride and knowing when it was time to talk to their parents and the police. It handles the topic of suicide and depression in a mature fashion that demonstrates that suicide is not the answer while still hinting at the fact that these are difficulties that people struggle. Another topic that is handles well in the book was parents. This may not seem like a difficult piece to portray but it is crucial that teenagers are shown parent figures that as they should be. They should be portrayed as role models, but not idolized, and shown as people that can be trusted and someone one can go to for help. These are all things Watched demonstrates perfectly. Many reviews and analysis’ also agree, one such review agreed that “Lyons also handles the parental relationships in this story extremely well. The teen's behavior has a definite impact on the parent's lives, which was portrayed honestly with fear and confusion as well as love and patience,”which is an important type of relationship for kids to be seeing

    In December 2013, I interviewed Sharon Anderson, principal of Semmes Elementary School, Mobile County Public School System. She shared that some students participate in Proxy Bypass which is the capability of bypassing blocking and filtering (S. Anderson, personal communication, December 14, 2013). Some sites used are studyharder.com, hidemyass.com, Kproxy.com, ultrasurf.com, psiphon.com and securetunnel.com. She discussed the Student Harassment Prevention Act which includes policy, a form for victims and procedures for investigating. The Mobile County Public School System is required to report incidents annually. All students and staff receive internet safety training. She stated that if school personnel know or should know, they have the moral duty to intervene. During an investigation, which is conducted by the security department, school system personnel attempt to determine whether or not the person making the threat has the capability of carrying out the threat.
