1. INTRODUCTION
An engine is a device which transforms one form of energy into another form. Most of the engines convert thermal engine to mechanical work and therefore they are called heat engine. Heat engine can be broadly classified into two types.
i. Internal combustion engine ii. External combustion engine

1.1 CLASSIFICATION OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE:-
This type of engine is again classified into two types.
i. Rotary ii. Reciprocating
The reciprocating engine is a highly complex engine and has hundreds of component which have to perform their function satisfactory to produce output power. There are two types of engine; spark ignition and compression ignition engine. The diesel engine works on diesel oil, a non-volatile fuel. The self-ignition temperature is comparatively low. In this case fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at high pressure at the end of the compression stroke. Self-ignition occurs due to the high temperature of air because of the high compression. Spark plug and ignition are not necessary as in the case of spark engine. The CI engine is having a higher compression ratio, so the maximum value of the thermal efficiency can be obtained is higher. It is possible to obtain a power stroke for every revolution of crankshaft increasing the output of this engine.
The four stroke diesel engine is one of the most efficient and versatile prime movers. Small diesel engine is used in pump sets, construction machinery, air compressors, drilling jigs and many miscellaneous applications. Diesel engines are used both for mobile and stationary electric generating plants of varying capacities. Compared to gasoline engine, diesel engines are more efficient and therefore manufactures have come out with diesel engines in personal transportation. However the vibration and unpleasant odor in the exhaust are the main drawbacks. Tractors for agricultural application use about 30 kw diesel engines whereas jeeps, buses and trucks use

    The diesel engine has provided the world with cheap and efficient power for over one hundred years. The invention was first thought up by Rudolph Diesel in 1892. He wanted to create an engine that would be more efficient than the steam engine, which was only 12% efficient. He filed for a patent in Germany in February of 1892. He was granted a patent for a “Working Method and Design for Combustion Engines...new efficient, thermal engine” (History). With his patent ready, he made contracts with large companies such as Frederick Krupp and other manufacturers. Diesel created his first working engine a year later, which ran on peanut oil. That was the fuel that Diesel thought would be overall the most efficient and cost effective, it was the first bio-diesel. The engine ran at 26% efficiency, which was 14% efficient more than the steam engine, almost double. However, Diesel did not think it was enough, so he went back to the drawing board. Later in 1987, he made another model that operated at a whopping 75% efficiency (History). This was an incredible achievement because it meant that it could replace the work that steam engines do at a fraction of the cost. Nowadays diesel engine manufacturers are in competition with gasoline engine manufacturers. Diesels are making comeback to the industry because they are quieter, lighter, more efficient, less polluting and more powerful than ever. Many companies recently have been releasing cars that have ridiculously high MPG's and more power than their gasoline counterparts. The people in the United States like the idea of a fuel efficient car, but get turned off when they hear the idea of a diesel car because of their reputation of being loud and stinky.     Air-standard analysis treats the fluid flow through the entire engine as air and approxi¬mates air as an ideal gas. In a real engine inlet flow may be all air, or it may be mixed, up with 7% fuel, either gaseous or as liquid droplets, or both. In air-standard analysis, even if all fluid in an engine cycle were air, some error would be introduced by assuming it to be an ideal gas with constant specific heats. At the low pressures of inlet and exhaust, air can accurately be treated as an ideal gas, but at the higher pressures during combustion, air will deviate from ideal gas behavior. A more serious error is introduced by assuming constant specific heats for the analysis. Spe¬cific heats of a gas have a fairly strong dependency on temperature and can vary as much as 30% in the temperature range of an engine. During the cycle of a real engine there are heat losses which are neglected in air-standard analysis. Loss of heat during combustion lowers actual peak temperature and pressure from what is predicted. The actual power stroke, therefore, starts at a lower pressure, and work output during expansion is decreased. A detailed study of the performance of a reciprocating internal combustion engine would take into account many features. These would include the combustion process occurring within the cylinder and the effects of irreversibility have associated with friction and with pressure and temperature gradients. Heat transfer between the gases in the cylinder and the cylinder walls and the work required to charge the cylinder and exhaust the products of combustion also would be considered. Owing to these complexities, accurate modeling of reciprocating internal combustion engines normally involves computer simulation.
