Why is a Washington State Education important to me? Washington State has been my dream college since I was a baby. It has been my families university of choice. The two most influential in my life Uncle Tony Grafton and Grandpa Donald Grafton, both alumni, raised me as a cougar. At my birth my Uncle Tony Grafton showed up at the hospital with a stuffed cougar from the WSU bookstore that sang the fight song and a baseball hat. At the time Tony was still attending WSU. As a baby I'd run around the house singing the cougar fight song instead of baby lullabies; and that WSU baseball hat rarely left my head. I had worn that baseball cap so often as a young boy, I had turned the

My parents always says, “the one investment they will give me, is the best education possible.” My parents have worked hard and paid for me to attend private catholic schooling my entire primary education. I currently attended an all-boys Catholic military college preparatory school. To be accepted to Marmion Military Academy was very competitive and to graduate from here is an honor. The student body overall is highly intelligent individuals. Students are all very competitive about getting good grades. When you factor in the fact that this is the most competitive class academically it shows a disadvantage to myself. Throughout Illinois State we have a different grading scale from around the country. For example an A here in the Chicagoland area is a ninety two for my particular school so if I were placed in a school with a less competitive grading scale I would have a higher GPA. Another disadvantage when just looking at my academic record on paper would be my class rank. Here at Marmion we learn to push ourselves in everything we do to the limit. We don’t elect easy classes for easy A’s we take core classes that we can learn concepts that will help us through life college. We don’t select easy electives for easy A’s we take core classes that we can learn concepts that will help us through life college. This high school has high expectations form each and every one of us and has prepared us for a college life wherever we go. Below is the scale used state wide for

The Kansas Jayhawks mascot was the first thing to catch my eye as I entered Allen Fieldhouse for the first time on January 20th, the day KU played against Baylor. The mascot was so big it stretched across the entire floor. Several other details seemed to catch my eye as well, like the glowing “KANSAS” letters that touched the wall next to the overpriced gift shop, the many show cases of KU basketball players and the illustrated sign that hung above the girls basketball show case that read, “Pay Heed, All Who Enter, Beware of the Phog”.…

Russ Posten, neighbor and close family friend, entered the breakfast room of my house for the interview, happy and positive, true to his nature. Sitting down, eager to begin, he gave me a brief over-view of his life. He lived in California until fifth of sixth grade, when he moved to Spokane, Washington. He started off at Jefferson Elementary, “was poured into Sacajawea Middle School, and dumped into Lewis and Clark.” In elementary and middle school he reported being socially awkward, but for Posten, high school was a time of social prosper. While these four years were a lot of fun, they were also very trying and life-defining.…

Being a community, network, and family details my view of the “Hokie Spirit.” At Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT), I am certain that there is overwhelming support from professors and students because of the unique atmosphere I perceived when touring. While walking around the brick buildings, I felt as if all students knew each other, or that each of them had something in common. This aspect that every person who strode pass me entailed, was pride or “Hokie Spirit.” I could sense the fulfillment each individual had for attending one of the top public schools in the United States, and because of this, “Hokie Spirit” flourishes throughout the campus.…

“Teely, because I’m so interested in seeing you apply with your Eagle Vision Application…” Central University. “An exclusive invitation from UNCP..” UNC Pembroke. “Mai-Teelee, you’ll want to read this.” Western Carolina. All these colleges and universities showed interest in me by reaching out through emails and letters in the mail but, it wasn’t them whom I was interested in. It was you, UNC Chapel Hill. The first time I heard about you was back in my sophomore year, in AP Environmental Science by a group of classmates who had visited the campus. At that time, I didn’t care that much for colleges. I was still worried about joining clubs and trying to make more friends and just, have fun. Like any other teenager. However, I became intrigued. Just what was it that made this school so well known and liked? Once I decided that I would aim for the medical field, my friends suggested, of course, Chapel Hill. You. They said “It’s a great medical school and you’ll get in easily because you’re Asian.” And being naive, I believed them. I didn’t quite realize just how high your expectations were. But it wouldn’t be too difficult I assumed…

This is caused by the parents in San Ramon to who grades are the most important part of their children’s life. To be one-up over other families, parents can, and will go out of their way to make sure their child has everything they need for success. Now, in San Ramon, students face too much pressure on performing well in school and bring home the best grades possible. All of this pressure may just be for the student’s own good, but sometimes it is just too much for a kid to handle. Since the majority of teachers in Gale Ranch designate Fridays to post students’ grades on Friday, pupils who bring home atrocious grades often find themselves slapped on with consequences and cannot enjoy their weekend. Since it’s mainly on Fridays, there is nothing the student can do about until Monday comes around. In San Ramon, most kids excel, and parents want their kid to be the smartest of them. According to K12.niche.com,” Dougherty Valley High School is the 11th best public high school in the state”. A future Dougherty Valley student speaks up about it. “All my parents care about is what score I got and what my grades are. They don’t care what I have learned or what I need to learn, just my score. ” Though grades are a key aspect that colleges look at, there is no point worrying about it so much. If some parents could just focus less on the score, and focus more on what their child can improve on, their child gets a confidence boost and. By knowing what they are excel at, they can make the decision they will major in college, which also affect their…

The focus on the GPA is for two main reasons. The first is because I want to be an example to other kids in my community. I can’t tell students to strive for excellence if I have a 3.0 GPA. The second reason is because I know that a high GPA, combined with other things, opens doors. One of those doors might be the chance to continue my education. One of my long-term goals is to get into graduate school. I want to get my master’s degree in education with a concentration on Education Policy and Program Evaluation. Another long-term goal is to start or become part of a movement towards equity through access to higher education for all people. The Honors College will help me reach my goals because of the support that is offered. I want to surround myself with high-achieving and high-performing students that want to engage in conversations that other students might be too afraid to have. There is a fire inside of me that burns for justice and I need to be surrounded by critical thinkers to keep it alive. My mother immigrated to the United States from Mexico where she would do strenuous labor for very…

Ever since high school, I have struggled with school. After graduating high school, I graduated with a 1.7 GPA. I always knew I was an average student, so I accepted my GPA proudly. However after entering college, everything changed. I knew everything was going to be more difficult and demanding. Beyond all the hardships of academics, I was also going to have to pay for all of education by myself, because my parents could not afford it. This adversity made it extremely difficult for me to decide if I wanted to continue my education and enter college. However, despite my finical struggle I decide to continue my education and apply for college. I applied to Rockland Community College, where I wanted to work on increasing my GPA.…

During my junior year I took an advanced placement psychology class, in which I received an "A" both semesters and got a 3 on the AP test. As well as an AP biology class that I received a “B” both semesters and got a 2 on the AP test. During both my lower class-men years I took all honor science classes either getting an “A” or a “B”. At top high schools all over the country, there is an unsaid, yet prevalent pressure to do everything in your power to place yourself at the top of the academic food chain; a pressure to prove to your parents and peers that you are among the best; a pressure to take advanced placement or honors classes. In communities in which most people graduate high school to go on to higher education, such as Port Washington, New York, the pressure to follow the example of the top tier students is absolutely overbearing. Due to these social pressures and expectations, many students feel the need to participate in classes they may not be ready to endure, and struggle in the course as a result. Happiness is compromised and stress takes…

According to Shepard (2005) there are two reasons for grade inflation. First she talks about how colleges turned into a “consumer product”. As Shepard (2005) explains “Pure and simple, tuition at a private college runs, on average, nearly $28,000 a year. If parents pay that much, they expect nothing less than A’s in return” (p.452). In other words, people think that if they pay for college they want straight A’s no matter how hard they work. The second reason is “helicopter parents”, these are the parent who are watching their kids every move. They want their kids to do so well that they end up pressuring them, which then leads the students to turn to grade…

When my parents first expressed to me that I needed to take advanced courses starting freshman year, I was skeptical. I desired an easy, laid-back experience in high school; however, my parents declared otherwise. I began freshman year with three honors classes, and the parental expectation to make at least ninety-five percent in all of my classes. At the time, I thought this to be too extreme, but little did I know that colleges look back on all grades…

Choosing a school in Chicago is a complicated task. The first option parents and students consider are neighborhood schools; these are schools where children are guaranteed acceptance if they live in the neighborhood located around the school. While there are many excellent neighborhood schools in the city of Chicago, there are also plenty of failing schools. There are also selective enrollment schools; these are schools that are still a part of CPS, but students must apply to gain admission. Then, there are charter schools; these are schools that are run by private organizations, and are often smaller, and have a specific focus. In choosing a school, families should closely consider the school’s high school graduation rate and college going rate.…

One way in which a school advertises their achievements is by making league tables accessible to the public and posting them onto the internet. By doing this, all parents are aware of the success the schools have in ensuring that all students earn a minimum of 5 A*-C’s. Therefore parents make an abrupt decision on schools before they have even visited them. It is all centred on competition when different schools have to strive to receive the most successful pupils. Each college tries to “win over” parents by offering the best of everything; the best departments, the best teachers, the best catering, the best facilities and so on. It is almost as though the parents are seen as customers within the “Education Market” that have to be persuaded to buy.…
