Along with those who have created such big works there are those who have influenced British literature. Keats being one of the authors who had such an influence. Although Keats work was in publication for four years before his death his works influenced others to write such as he did. His works were first looked down upon and were criticized for being strange but now they are what influenced others to write. During that time period more and more romantic writers began to emerge. Another writer who influenced the british romantic time period with their works was Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Samuel although he was not exactly writing in the same style as other romanticists he was a romantic writer. Samuel Coleridge helped influence English literature …show more content…

Emily Dickinson was born December 10, 1830 in Amherst, Massachusetts. Emily Dickinson lived in her home most of her life because of that she had time to read different types of literature as well get involved with writing her own works. It is said her romantic spark came from a Reverend named Charles whom she seemed to have a romantic interest in. Because Emily was living in her home her family also influenced her very much. Her father and mother were both involved with the practice of politics so that greatly influenced her writings. Emily’s writings hold romantic features because Emily like other romanticists believed in her own writing she seeked individuality. Another characteristic of romanticism found in her writings is her addressing many concerns that many other writers refused to cover. She wrote about death and sense of identity (Kannan, Ashley. N.p., 24 Nov. 2012. Web. 24 Nov. 2015. ). One of Dickinson’s well known poetry is I felt a Funeral, in my Brain. This work of poetry is most famous for its acknowledgement of mental health issues. This poem incorporates the theme of death and the afterlife. This poem is said to resemble Dickinson and her health issues. Her nephew was diagnosed with epilepsy while she, as far as we know, had agoraphobic tendencies meaning she had a fear of places that would cause embarrassment or panic. Which can relate back to why she never really left her

"Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving is a fiction story of a character whose destiny was affected by marvellous circumstances. In comparison to Benjamin's Franklin Autobiography and Ralph Waldo Emerson's Self reliance, there are some things that are similar, but overall Rip Van Winkle is completely different plot; in other words, it's main character is unique. I found several evidences proving that.…

Washington Irving was a well-respected author of his time. He had written many works, and most were under his pen name: Diedrich Knickerbocker. Two of Irving’s, or Knickerbocker’s most famous works were that of Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Both of these works have similarities as well as differences between them both. The stories were written during the same time period, yet are supposed to have taken place before and after a war. In America, there were lots of pressing issues at hand, and Irving touches on some of these during his works.…

“Rip Van Winkle” and “The Devil and Tom Walker” are both written by Washington Irving and feature a man living with his wife. Each story depicts their wives in a similar fashion; vicious, pestering annoyances that contribute little to nothing towards the well-being of the protagonist. Irving’s general scorn towards women is manifested in a few different ways, even looking beyond their blatantly negative descriptions.…

Rip van winkle is about a man who goes deep into the woods one day to go hunting. Rip some one calling his name and is led to strange men. "What seemed particularly odd to Rip was, that though these folks were evidently amusing themselves, yet they maintained the gravest faces, the most mysterious silence, and were, withal the most melancholy party of pleasure he had ever witnessed." Rip drinks some ale and falls asleep. He wakes up twenty years later not knowing time has passed by. This strange plotline is very romantic. It would be impossible for someone to fall asleep for twenty years and still be living. It goes against the nature of science. Most of the stories of the time written by men were historical. Although Irving's attempts to make his story seem true by referring to historical documents, it is too strange to be real.…

Emily Dickinson was born in 1830 in Massachusetts. Emily was raised and would eventually live her entire life in almost complete isolation. The few people Dickinson came into contact with were her family and Reverend Charles Wadsworth. Despite how cut off Dickinson was from the world, she still managed to read vivaciously and was influenced by many other poets. Another prominent influence in her poetry was her heavily Puritan background. Dickinson’s poems were only found upon her death and were later published by her…

Irving integrates these three characteristics very well. One, it is set in the past in a remote time. Two, the story has remarkable and exaggerated characters. Lastly, this tale includes mysterious events and their consequences. “Rip Van Winkle” is a myth. A myth is a traditional story, one concerning the early history of a culture. The short story I have chosen to read by Washington Irving is “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” This story takes place in a little village on the Hudson River which by some is called Greensburgh, but which is more generally known as Tarry Town. The main character in the story, Ichabod Crane, who “tarried” in Sleepy Hollow came about for the purpose of instructing the children of the vicinity. The main point of the story began with the arrival of a Negro with an invitation to Ichabod to attend a party at the Van Tassel’s mansion. After receiving the good news, Ichabod fixed up his best and only suit and borrowed a horse from Hans Van Ripper, in order to impress Mynheer Van Tassel’s…

Washington Irving wrote Rip Van Winkle with the American people in mind. At this time society was changing drastically. America was attempting to go through a struggle with forming their own identity. America wanted to have an identity that would set them free from English culture and rule. Irving uses his main character, Rip Van Winkle, to symbolize America. Rip goes through the same struggles that America was going through at this time before and after the Revolution. Irving uses such great symbolism in this story to describe the changes that American society went through. This story covers a wide variety of time periods including: America before English rule, early American colonies under English rule, and America after the Revolutionary War.…

How could someone possibly sleep for twenty years? Rip Van Winkle managed to, thanks to a barrel of gin! This is more interesting than wearing a black veil and making people scared. Recently in literature class we read two stories, Washington Irving’s “Rip Van Winkle” and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Ministers Black Veil”. It is this writer’s opinion that the second story was the best story-but why? The answer to this question begins by examining each author’s purpose for writing his story. When Washington Irving wrote Rip Van Winkle he wanted to create a satire that makes you think about how progress is for the best or not. It also makes fun of British diction and British literary snobbery. This is more satisfying to read than a Minister scaring people with a Black Veil on his face. The two stories present different styles of writing and their characters are vastly different. Once again, Irving’s story has a more elevated diction and complex syntax to make a point. Finally, a good story must be relevant. It’s theme must be timeless, and once more relevant to today than ever. For this four reasons is that I vote “rip Van Winkle” the best story. It has a more realistic themes, the know conflict, interesting setting, and its unreliable narrators that enrich the stories ideas.…

In Rip Van Winkle, Irving shows his doubts the American Identity and the American dream. After the Revolutionary war, American was trying to develop its own course. They were free to govern their own course of development; however, some of them had an air of uncertainties on their own identity in this new country. Irving was born among this generation in the newly created United States of America, and also felt uncertainty about the American identity. Irving might be the writer that is the least positive about being an American. The main reason for this uncertainty is the new born American has no history and tradition while the Europe has a great one accumulated for thousands of years. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, Irving borrows an old European tale to make it take place in America. This tale related to the Dutch colonists haunts the kaatskill mountains. In order to highlight the American identity, Irving praises the "majestic" mountains which Europe lacks. He describes the mountains that "their summits…will glow and light up like a crown of glory" Nevertheless, the use of these ancient explorers into Rip Van Winkle only to show that although American has formed its own identity, no one can cut its connection with Europe. No wonder when America was still under tyranny of the British rule, some people still cannot cut the blood relationship with Europe. Therefore, the American identity is blurred by their relationship with Europe since then.…
